- Over the years, with the determination to get rich on his homeland and his diligence and hard work, Mr. Luong Dinh Kien, born in 1974, Hop Nhat village, Dong Y commune, Bac Son district, has successfully built a comprehensive economic model, bringing in high income. He is also a typical example in the emulation movement to develop the local economy.
In late May 2025, we had the opportunity to work in Dong Y commune and were led by the commune's Farmers' Association to visit the economic model of Mr. Luong Dinh Kien's family. While busy harvesting vegetables, Mr. Kien shared: Born into a farming family, I have been familiar with farm work since childhood. When I grew up, I continued to stick with and make a living from agricultural production. Previously, I mainly grew vegetables for sale on a small scale, so the economic efficiency was unstable. Therefore, I researched and studied to develop a vegetable growing model to meet market demand.
Accordingly, in 2023, after a period of research on mass media and learning practical experience on safe vegetable growing models in districts such as Huu Lung, Cao Loc..., Mr. Kien decided to invest in a greenhouse with an area of over 1,000 m2, with a full lighting system and automatic irrigation. At the same time, he also grows a variety of vegetables and tubers and produces more vegetable seeds to supply to the market.
Mr. Kien said: With the goal of producing vegetables in a safe direction, besides investing in greenhouses, during the planting and care process, I focus on using organic and microbial fertilizers; using lime to treat the soil... not using pesticides, minimizing the use of chemical fertilizers...
Thanks to the methodical investment and the right direction, the vegetables and tubers produced by Mr. Kien's family are all safe, have stable output and are favored by consumers. On average, each year, his family sells more than 6 tons of finished vegetables and more than 300,000 vegetable seedlings to the market, bringing in an income of over 240 million VND. The main consumption markets are in the districts of Binh Gia, Bac Son...
Not stopping at the safe vegetable growing model, grasping the needs of the market, Mr. Kien also invested in machinery to produce dried vermicelli. Accordingly, each year, he sells more than 8 tons of finished dried vermicelli to the market, with a selling price of 30,000 VND/kg, bringing in an income of about 240 million VND after deducting expenses. In particular, to create products that are safe for consumers' health, in the process of producing vermicelli, he does not use chemicals to make white, chewy vermicelli and actively tests the water source used to make vermicelli to ensure quality. Thanks to that, his family's dried vermicelli products are widely consumed in the market, not only in the province but also in other provinces and cities such as: Hanoi , Hoa Binh...
In addition, his family also developed a model of growing Dien grapefruit. It is known that he has been growing Dien grapefruit since 2006 with about 100 grapefruit trees. However, with unstable prices, his family did not pay attention to care, and it was not until the last 2 years, when he realized the market demand for grapefruits with unique shapes for Tet, that he focused on production. Accordingly, he created shapes so that the words "Phuc", "Loc", "Tho" were engraved on the grapefruit. With this method, he can sell each grapefruit for a price ranging from 40,000 - 50,000 VND/fruit, 3 - 4 times higher than normal grapefruit and helping him earn an additional income of about 50 million VND/year. From the comprehensive economic model, his family has a total income of 530 million VND/year and creates seasonal jobs for 4 local workers.
Mr. Hoang Xuan Hong, Vice Chairman of Dong Y Commune People's Committee, said: Mr. Kien is a pioneer in developing a safe vegetable growing model, bringing high economic efficiency in the commune. In addition to being active in developing the family economy, Mr. Kien is also very active in participating in emulation movements, charity and humanitarian fundraising activities launched by the village and commune. In particular, he always promotes the spirit of solidarity, is ready to guide and share experiences with households who come to learn the model.
With his efforts in developing the family economy, in January 2025, Mr. Kien was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for being a farmer with an effective economic development model, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction and job creation for local workers.
