Neville: 'MU will try their best to enter the top 6 next season'

While MU is aiming for the top 4, former captain Gary Neville believes that even if the club tries and strengthens its squad, it will only be able to reach the top 6.

Gary Neville does not think MU is capable of winning the Premier League.

This summer, MU has been very active in the transfer market, spending nearly 200 million pounds to bring in 4 new players. They prioritized strengthening their attack, signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford and most recently Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

Last season, United struggled to score goals, ending the Premier League campaign with a goal difference of -10. That explains why they focused heavily on adding firepower in attack. The other signing was left-back Diego Leon.

After finishing 15th last season, United will miss out on European football for the first time since 2014/15, meaning they can focus on domestic competition, with the aim of qualifying for the 2026/27 European Cup.

Although the biggest goal is the top 4 to return to the Champions League, the strength of the opponents with the same goal can make MU satisfied with a place in the Europa League or Europa Conference League.

Neville said he was happy with the transfer business his former club had done, but believed they still needed to strengthen their goalkeeper position to increase their chances of breaking into the top six.

Neville told Sky Sports when talking about MU's transfer activities: "Two of the new players are proven players in the Premier League, of course they will need to improve. Sesko is young, has potential. He is young, can he start well? That is very important for him."

"Will they settle in quickly at United? Will they be able to score around 35-40 goals, which is the standard for these three players? If they score 40 goals, given how poor United's attack was last season, then there's a chance they could finish in the top six. But they need to stabilise these three players and at United now we can't take that for granted anymore. If they add a goalkeeper, I think they can finish in the top six, but there are many other factors that need to happen," the MU legend concluded.
