Speaking at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on September 20, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov pointed out the growing risk of a global conflict.
“The risk of global conflicts is also increasing. In order to prevent them and steer events towards peace, Russia has stressed and asserted that all the provisions of the UN Charter must be respected and applied not selectively, but in their entirety and in their interconnection,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov made it clear that he was referring to the principles of sovereign equality of states, non-interference in internal affairs, respect for territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination. According to Lavrov, the West is currently using these terms only for “selfish” purposes to satisfy its geopolitical needs, thereby only “shaking global stability, aggravating and promoting new sources of tension.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky left the UN Security Council meeting room where a meeting on Ukraine was taking place without waiting for Foreign Minister Lavrov to speak.
Earlier, when the President of Ukraine spoke at the UN Security Council, the Russian delegation led by Ambassador Vasily Nebenza was present in the hall. Mr. Zelensky spoke second, Mr. Lavrov spoke 12th.
