Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 17 that Russian President Vladimir Putin received North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, who is visiting Russia. Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui had important talks.
According to TASS, Foreign Minister Lavrov spoke during talks with his North Korean counterpart, appreciating Pyongyang's support amid Russia's special military operations in Ukraine; hoping that effective cooperation between the two countries at the United Nations and other multilateral organizations will continue.
According to the Russian Foreign Minister, the talks assessed the preliminary results of active cooperation programs implemented by the two countries to implement the agreements reached at the September 2023 summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vostochny, Russia.
The Kremlin said on January 15 that it plans to further develop partnership with North Korea in all areas, calling North Korea Russia’s “closest neighbor and partner.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said Moscow hopes Putin’s visit to North Korea will take place in the “near future.”
The North Korean foreign minister's visit to Russia comes amid heightened political tensions on the Korean peninsula in recent weeks following joint military exercises by South Korea and the United States. North Korea has denounced the exercises as a threat to its national security.
