Russia takes over the role of President of the United Nations Security Council

From July 1, Russia takes over from South Korea the role of President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for one month with the main topics of discussion being the solution to the conflict in the Middle East, the new global security equation and the UN's cooperation with regional organizations.

The Security Council is the permanent body of the United Nations, primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security. The presidency of the Security Council rotates monthly among the 15 member states of the Security Council.

In an interview with the press, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that Russia has planned three important events during its tenure as President of the Security Council.

One of these events is an open debate on multilateral cooperation to build a fairer, more democratic and sustainable world order. Specifically, at the meeting scheduled for July 16, Russia will present a new global “security equation”. An open debate on the topic of resolving the situation in the Middle East is scheduled for July 17. Both meetings on July 16 and 17 are expected to be chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Another important event during Russia's presidency month is the UNSC debate on cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, scheduled for July 19.

Russia last held the presidency of the UN Security Council in February 2022. Relations between the US and Russia were strained after the conflict between Russia and Ukraine broke out at that time and have continued to this day. The US has banned entry to hundreds of Russian citizens, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. It is not yet clear whether Washington will issue visas to Mr. Lavrov and the Russian delegation.
