Mr. Kim Jong Un gave an important speech at the 80th Anniversary of the Founding of the Korean People's Army Air Force (November 28), orienting the future development of the air force.
He asserted that the North Korean air force “will be equipped with new strategic military assets and take on a new important mission.”
Emphasizing the key role of the air force, the North Korean leader said “expectations for the Air Force are very high.” He also ordered the Air Force to “resolutely repel and control all acts of espionage and military provocation” from outside to protect the country’s sovereign airspace.
The announcement comes as Pyongyang continues to modernize its military, with a clear priority given to upgrading its air force. This was evidenced by its first live-fire air-to-air drills in May, and the introduction of an airborne early warning and control aircraft in March this year.
