Russia claims to produce weapons surpassing the West

VnExpressVnExpress25/12/2023

Industry and Trade Minister Manturov said Russia's weapons production rate has surpassed the West's and Moscow wants to maintain this pace.

"I don't want to brag, but I can say that Russia is getting into production earlier and achieving faster shipments than Western countries. We are ahead by a certain margin," Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said in an interview on December 24.

Mr. Manturov said that Russia will maintain the current course, both replenishing the stockpile of weapons used and lost in Ukraine and maintaining the progress of producing new weapons.

According to the Russian Minister, the current issue is how long the intense arms production race will last, when the West is also taking steps to speed up weapons production to catch up with Russia.

During nearly two years of war, Western military experts and defense officials have repeatedly stated that Moscow’s arsenal, including guided missiles, is nearing depletion due to high frequency of use. However, Russian defense corporations have switched to wartime working mode to ensure production speed to meet the needs of the campaign in Ukraine.

At a meeting on December 19, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced that the country's defense industry enterprises "have quadrupled their capacity and are operating 24/7." "Since February 2022, tank production has increased 5.6 times, infantry fighting vehicles 3.6 times, armored personnel carriers 3.5 times, UAVs 16.8 times and artillery shells 17.5 times," he said.

Repair units have increased their capacity by 1.5 times, and defense industry enterprises have also set up more than 270 field repair workshops in the campaign area.

Meanwhile, the US and its European allies are trying to increase weapons production, especially artillery shells, but are facing many difficulties after a long period of continuous cuts in the defense budget to focus on investing in economic development.
