"Israel actually carried out an airstrike right in the vicinity of Hmeimim," Alexander Lavrentiev, Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy to the Middle East, told RIA Novosti news agency.

And he added that, "of course, our military has informed the Israeli authorities that such actions endanger the lives of Russian soldiers there and are unacceptable."

That is why Russia hopes that the incident that happened this October will not be repeated, he said.

Israel has carried out heavy bombing in Syria but rarely targeted Latakia, northwest of the capital Damascus.

But in mid-October, Syrian state media claimed that Israel had attacked the port city of Latakia. The city, and specifically its airport, is located near the town of Hmeimim, which hosts a Russian air base.
