Admiring Vietnam's landscape in the 1930s-1940s through the lens of a Ukrainian photographer - Lang Son Electronic Newspaper

The exhibition takes viewers "back in time" to the past, to moments of life, landscapes and people of Vietnam during the period 1930-1940.

The appearance of Thang Long Imperial Citadel nearly a century ago, captured by photographer Sofia Yablonska.

On April 17, the Vietnam Women's Museum in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine in Vietnam organized the opening of the exhibition. “Sofia Yablonska-A Journey Through the Century” on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (January 23, 1992 - January 23, 2024).

The exhibition introduces 55 documents and images recorded through the lens of Sofia Yablonska, a Ukrainian writer, photographer and cameraman.

There, the public will take a journey "backwards" to the past, returning to moments of life, landscapes and Vietnamese people in the period 1930-1940.

The photos take viewers along Sofia Yablonska's journey to explore Vietnam, a place she and her family have deeply loved for 10 years.

Exhibition showcases the legacy of photographer and videographer Sofia Yablonska.

Viewers can easily see scenes of rural life with vast fields and hard-working people, the majestic and pristine Ha Long Bay or images of Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Long Bien Bridge, Hoan Kiem Lake nearly a century ago. The cultural diversity of ethnic groups is also captured by Sofia Yablonska through the beauty of Thai, Mong, Dao Tien women and ancient Hanoians .

In addition to black and white photos, the exhibition reveals the emotional depth of author Sophia Yablonska towards the landscape and people of Vietnam through shared lines taken from her diary “Far Away.”

For her, Vietnam appeared as a magical, fascinating land to explore: “A strange land! There was so much beauty in it that was inaccessible and forbidden!”; “A few days later, I left that mountainous region and visited two ethnic groups, the Meo and the Mang. They had a language, costumes and customs quite different and interesting from those of the lowland people… Living with them, I had everything to my liking. The Meo brought rice, fish, wild game and vegetables to my house, came to help me with my work, brought saddled horses and showed me the way through the wild and wonderful mountains…”

Exhibition “Sofia Yablonska-A Journey Through the Century” The opening ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. on April 17 and will be open to the public until April 30 at the Vietnam Women's Museum, 36 Ly Thuong Kiet, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi./.

Sofia Yablonska (1907-1971) was a female writer, photographer and filmmaker specializing in travel.

In 1927, at the age of 20, she left her hometown of Halychyna (western Ukraine) and began her journey to conquer Paris.

After the first successful trip, with her camera, Sofia Yablonska traveled alone around the world to film documentaries about ethnic groups in the countries she visited such as Morocco, Egypt, Djibouti, Sri Lanka, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, China and Southeast Asian countries: Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia.

With openness and sincerity, Sofia Yablonska captured interesting and emotional moments about the lives of indigenous people.
