The project will be implemented over 5 years, from 2024 - 2028. This is an important initiative to promote sustainable coffee development, reduce emissions and comply with EUDR anti-deforestation regulations.

The project is sponsored by Intimex Dak Nong Joint Stock Company and sustainable coffee consumption partner JDE Peet's. TMT Consulting Joint Stock Company is the consulting and implementing unit.

Hundreds of hectares of old, low-yielding coffee trees are being replanted by the Project on Sustainable Coffee Production towards Reducing Emissions and Meeting EU Deforestation Regulations (EUDR) in Dak Nong.

The project is implemented in Nam Xuan, Dak D'ro, Dak Sor, Tan Thanh, Nam Nung, Quang Phu communes, Krong No district, Quang Son commune, Dak Glong district and other areas of Dak Nong province. The project is implemented over 5 years with about 10,000 households participating.

Mr. Dinh Quang Cuong's family in Ea Sno village, Dak D'ro commune, Krong No district grows more than 2 hectares of coffee interspersed with cashew trees. When the project was implemented in the area, he was instructed by project staff to choose cashew trees as shade trees for the coffee garden.

“When shade trees are properly arranged, coffee plants do not burn their leaves when exposed to strong sunlight. They require less water, but their productivity is the same as that of pure cultivation,” he said.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Truong, also from Dak D'ro commune, Krong No district, was guided by the project on soil improvement techniques and supported with seeds to replant coffee.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Truong, also in Dak D'ro commune, Krong No district, has 2.5 hectares of old coffee. To carry out replanting, Mr. Truong was guided by the project on soil improvement techniques and supported with seeds for replanting.

“The project supports replanting seedlings, intercropping forestry trees, organizing training courses, and linking value chains, so production space is expanded. People are more proactive in their production chain,” said Mr. Truong.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tam, Director of TMT Consulting Joint Stock Company, meeting EUDR standards is a key factor to maintain competitiveness and access to the European market, one of the largest coffee consuming markets in the world .

By reducing emissions and preventing deforestation, the project contributes to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and livelihood improvement for local communities.

The sustainable coffee production project was implemented to address urgent challenges facing the Dak Nong coffee industry, such as climate change, land degradation and increasingly stringent international market requirements for sustainability and product origin.

This comprehensive coffee project focuses on six main components, supporting farmers and stakeholders in the value chain. In terms of capacity building, the project has trained 1,050 trainers (TOT) to build a team of experts in sustainable farming.

At the same time, 10,000 farming households participated in 200 training courses, equipped with advanced and sustainable farming knowledge and skills, along with documents and videos guiding regenerative agricultural practices. The project supported replanting and intercropping seedlings, soil improvement, increased coverage, and income diversification.

Farmers were guided to apply rainfall insurance, IPM and agricultural waste management, reduce risks and protect the environment. Over 800 soil samples were analyzed to advise on balanced fertilization, reduce costs and optimize productivity.

The Project's coffee farming discussions often attract hundreds of households from communes in Krong No district to participate.

To meet EUDR, TMT Consulting builds a traceability database, collects GPS, draws land plot boundaries, and provides farm diary.

EUDR regulations are implemented to each garden, including internal management systems, annual data updates, transparent tracking of coffee production, processing and trade information.

The project creates a foundation for developing cooperatives and agricultural services (centralized drying, spraying, weed management, nurseries), helping farmers link production, enhance collective strength and access professional and effective support services.

Replanted coffee varieties are selected based on actual surveys of production needs and cultivation conditions in localities.

The sustainable coffee production project in Dak Nong is expected to create positive impacts on many aspects, from improving productivity and coffee quality, reducing production costs, protecting the environment, improving farmers' livelihoods to meeting international market requirements.
