The proportion of high-tech products increased sharply.
Up to now, the product structure has shifted positively when the proportion of high and medium-tech products in Vietnam has increased significantly, creating the basis for the formation of a number of large-scale private industrial corporations with the ability to compete in the international market. The proportion of processed exported goods in the total export value increased from 65% in 2016 to 85% in 2020. The proportion of high-tech product export value increased from 44.3% in 2016 to 49.8% in 2020.

Notably, in the first 4 months of 2025, Vietnam's industrial production recorded impressive growth, with the index of industrial production (IIP) increasing by 8.4% over the same period - the highest level since 2020. The growth momentum continued to come from the processing and manufacturing industry with an increase of 10.1%, affirming its key role in the industrial structure. Many sectors had outstanding growth such as rubber - plastic production increased by 27.5%, electrical equipment increased by 24.7%, chemicals increased by 24.3%, textile increased by 14.5%.
A memorable milestone was when UNIDO's industrial competitiveness report moved Vietnam from the group of "developing economies" to the group of "emerging industrial economies", showing that industrial competitiveness has improved significantly.
It is important to note that industry has become the sector with the largest contribution to the state budget, accounting for more than 90% of the country's total export turnover. The structure of the industrial sector has changed positively, gradually reducing the proportion of resource-intensive industries and low-tech industries, gradually increasing the proportion of medium- and high-tech industries (the proportion of processing and manufacturing industry in GDP increased from 13% in 2010 to 16.7% in 2020). A number of large private industrial corporations have been formed and developed with the potential to reach out to regional and international markets.
Prioritize platform industries
According to experts and managers, to develop industry and improve competitiveness in the global market, it is necessary to have a system of solutions and policies that are synchronous and unified from theory to practice to mobilize resources and promote the strengths of Vietnamese industries.
More deeply, to have a truly developed industry that plays a key role in promoting economic growth, from the perspective of the Ministry of Industry and Trade , it is necessary to have a new approach and thinking about the model and policy of industrialization and modernization of Vietnam in the new context and conditions of the period up to 2030, with a vision to 2045.
At the same time, the industrialization and modernization policy needs to be oriented towards expanding from traditional mechanisms and policies such as credit incentives and tax exemptions to new mechanisms and policies such as budget support. In addition, it is necessary to focus on building new growth drivers for Vietnam's industry according to the perspective of sustainable development.
Mr. Tran Viet Hoa - Director of the Department of Industry (Ministry of Industry and Trade) - emphasized that, going into more specific goals, for industrial development policies, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will propose key points, focusing on developing basic and priority industries and sectors. In addition, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will also recommend the Government to build large-scale industrial clusters and zones to attract investment as well as build industrial production chains; there should be policies to build large corporations to lead the following industries. In parallel with developing basic industries, it is still necessary to develop industries whose products are input materials for other industries such as self-sufficient industries, mechanics, chemicals and materials industries.
Up to now, Vietnam has formed a number of key industries of the economy such as: Oil and gas exploitation and processing; electronics, telecommunications, information technology; metallurgy, iron and steel; cement and construction materials; textiles, footwear; mechanical processing and manufacturing, automobiles, motorbikes..., creating an important foundation for long-term growth, as well as promoting the process of modernization and industrialization of the country. |
