Việt NamViệt Nam13/09/2024

TPO – Because the flood remains at a very high level, the tide reduces the ability of flood to drain into the sea, so flooding in low-lying areas along rivers and outside the dikes in Hanoi, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh , Ha Nam, and Hai Duong may last for many days to come.

This morning (September 13), floods on the upper reaches of rivers in the North have significantly decreased, below alert level 1 such as Thao River in Yen Bai , Bao Ha, Lao Cai, Lo River in Tuyen Quang. However, the situation is still very complicated on rivers in the midlands and Northern Delta.

The flood on the Cau River in Bac Ninh reached its peak at 7.79m last night, 1.49m above alert level 3, only 5cm away from the historic flood of 1971. At 1am this morning, the flood was still 7.74m high, 1.48m above alert level 3. It is forecasted that today and tonight, the flood on the Cau River will decrease very slowly, remaining above alert level 3.

The flood receded very slowly, so today and tonight, the Hoang Long River remains at alert level 3, one of the current flood hotspots.

Thuong River at Phu Lang Thuong (Bac Giang) at 1am this morning, flood level was 7.06m, 76cm above alert level 3. It is forecasted that today and tonight, the flood will recede very slowly and remain above alert level 3.

Luc Nam River in Luc Nam (Bac Giang) at 1am this morning, flood level was 6.32m, 2cm above alert level 3. It is forecasted that today, the flood will level off and remain above alert level 3. From tonight, the flood level on Luc Nam River will drop below alert level 3 and above alert level 2.

On the Thai Binh River in Hai Duong, the flood is also slowly receding. At 1am this morning, the flood on the Thai Binh River at Pha Lai measuring point was 6.17m high, 17cm above alert level 3. It is forecasted that today and tonight, the flood on the Thai Binh River will be below alert level 3 and above alert level 2.

Flooding on the Red River in Hanoi has decreased overnight. As of 6am this morning, according to data from the Hanoi City Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, the flood level was 10.05m, 45cm below alert level 2, and 1.32m lower than the peak on the night of September 11. It is forecasted that today and tonight, the flood on the Red River will gradually decrease below alert level 1.

With the above flood developments, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warns that flooding will continue for many days in low-lying areas, low-lying areas along rivers, and alluvial areas outside the main dike in the provinces/cities including Hanoi, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Ha Nam, and Hai Duong.

High flood levels lasting for many days can also cause riverbank dykes to overflow, landslides to dykes and embankments, seriously affecting vulnerable riverbank locations in Hanoi, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Thai Binh, and Ninh Binh.

The North is experiencing the worst floods in decades. In Hanoi, the floodwaters on the Red River are at their highest in 20 years, and on the Thao River in Yen Bai, the flood peak has surpassed the record of 1968. This is also the first time in history that Thai Nguyen has suffered such a severe flood. In Bac Giang, floods are comparable to those in 1986 and 2008, causing huge damage. As of noon on September 12, floods have left 327 people dead and missing, with particularly large material damage.

The weather forecast for today and tomorrow in the North is clear, favorable for search and rescue work for serious landslides in the localities. However, in the evening, there may be localized thunderstorms in some localities, causing heavy rain in a short time.
