"Flooded" with plastic bags at the traditional market

BPO - Plastic bags can help us carry goods conveniently, but every day, millions of these bags are thrown away, becoming a huge burden on the environment. Although there have been many measures calling for limiting the use of plastic bags, the reality at traditional markets is still alarming. Reporters recorded this problem at some traditional markets in Binh Phuoc province.

At Bu Na market, Nghia Trung commune, Bu Dang district, we can easily see the image of convenient plastic bags appearing everywhere. From bunches of vegetables, meat and fish to lemons and chili peppers... everything is contained in plastic bags. Ms. Van Thi Ha, a trader at Bu Na market, said: It is very difficult to sell meat and fish without plastic bags. Each customer needs at least 2 or 3 bags to keep it clean. We know it is not good for the environment, but there is no more convenient way. If there is a type of environmentally friendly bag that is cheap, we would also want to change.

Ms. Doan Thi Nghia in Binh Trung village, Nghia Binh commune, Bu Dang district shared: I know that using a lot of plastic bags is not good, but if I go to the market without this bag, what will I use to carry things? Everyone here uses plastic bags when going to the market, no one brings a basket.

Plastic bags are widely used by people in traditional markets.

At the stalls and grocery stores at Dong Xoai Market (Dong Xoai City), plastic bags of all sizes and colors are always available and cost only about 25-35 thousand VND/kg, with hundreds of kilograms of plastic bags sold every day. Mr. Le Quang Tuan, the owner of a grocery store at Dong Xoai Market, said: I have been in business for many years. Every day, I sell about 60kg of plastic bags of all kinds, mainly to customers who sell food and goods at the market. Everyone needs them because they help customers store things quickly and neatly. I also know that using a lot of plastic bags is not good, but now there is no other type that is more convenient and cheaper, so I still mainly sell plastic bags.

Most of the vendors at Dong Xoai traditional market still use non-biodegradable plastic bags to carry goods for customers when this product meets many criteria such as convenience, speed, and low cost.

Hundreds of kilograms of plastic bags are sold every day at Dong Xoai market.

Plastic bags are thrown into the environment at Bu Na market after use.

Ms. Do Thi Thanh Thuy in Quarter 1, Tan Dong Ward, Dong Xoai City shared: I know that plastic bags are very difficult to decompose in the environment, but now there is nothing else to store goods for customers so I have to use them. I only sell small breakfasts, so I don't make much profit, so I use paper bags or biodegradable bags, while these types of bags are much more expensive.

According to environmental experts, plastic bags take hundreds of years to completely decompose. Indiscriminately throwing away plastic bags not only causes harm to the environment but also affects human health. Therefore, preventing plastic bag pollution is not the responsibility of an individual, but of the whole society. Try starting with small actions, such as bringing a basket when going to the market, using environmentally friendly bags, refusing to accept plastic bags when not necessary... Every change today will contribute to creating a greener environment in the future.
