( Quang Ngai Newspaper) - Fishermen in coastal communes of Binh Son district have a very unique profession, which is fishing for octopus using snail shells. It is a seasonal profession, but it brings fishermen a good income.

Taking advantage of the days when the sea is rough and he cannot go fishing, Mr. Nguyen Hai, in Thanh Thuy village, Binh Hai commune (Binh Son) prepares snail shells to make octopus fishing rods. Mr. Hai said that octopus fishing is a traditional profession from his ancestors. Unlike conventional fishing methods, octopus fishing does not require nets or any bait, just using fishing lines made from snail shells to attract octopuses. “To catch octopus, the most important thing is to choose beautiful red snail shells with beautiful patterns. Each fishing line will need 3-4 snail shells and holes will be punched in these shells to thread a fishing line about 15m long. Octopuses love to hunt mantis shrimp, so the more the fishing line resembles a mantis shrimp, the more octopus you can catch. When casting the line, the octopus will hear the sound of the snail shell, thinking that the mantis shrimp will cling tightly to the shell. The fisherman must be quick and skillful in pulling the fishing line to catch the octopus in time,” said Mr. Hai.

From early morning, at Ganh Ca beach, Chau Thuan Bien village, Binh Chau commune (Binh Son), there were many fishermen coming here to catch octopus. Many fishermen said that every year, from October to December of the lunar calendar, fishermen will enter the octopus fishing season. This is the time when the sea is rough, fishermen who work as divers in Hoang Sa and Truong Sa return to their hometowns to anchor their boats. Therefore, thanks to the octopus fishing profession, fishermen have extra income during the rough sea season.

As a fisherman with more than 20 years of experience in octopus fishing, fisherman Truong Trang, in Chau Thuan Bien village, Binh Chau commune, said that when he sees sea foam on the rocks, it is also the time when octopus, also known as foam squid, appears. The best time to fish for octopus is at night or early morning, but the best time to catch is on days when the tide is low. Just walk along the rocks along the shore to catch octopus, without having to go out to sea to face dangerous big waves. On average, a person can catch 0.5 - 1kg of octopus in an hour. With a price of about 200,000 VND/kg, I only need to spend 3 - 4 hours a day to earn more than 400,000 VND.

Catching octopus with snail shells helps the octopus stay fresh, so it is very popular. Many traders and customers who want to buy octopus must order in advance from fishermen. With this unique fishing method, fishermen in Binh Chau commune are currently planning to turn octopus catching with snail shells into an experience activity for tourists , to increase income.
