To make a perfect lantern, craftsmen must pay attention to every step.
From choosing old bamboo, boiling it thoroughly to prevent termites, drying it and then shaving it thin, to creating the frame and gluing the fabric, each step requires meticulousness from the lantern maker.
It is known that currently in Hoi An there are about 40 families still maintaining the traditional lantern making profession.
Every year, the craft village is most bustling in the twelfth lunar month to prepare for the Lunar New Year. In addition, festivals such as the Mid-Autumn Festival or Vu Lan Festival are also times when demand for lanterns increases.
"At the end of the year, the number of orders starts to increase, we produce more than 200 lanterns every day so we have to work continuously. I am very happy because until now there are still many people who like to play with lanterns," said the owner of a lantern production facility in Hoi An.
To meet the increasingly diverse tastes of customers, Hoi An lanterns are created with many designs and sizes.
Simple models such as round, hexagonal, octagonal lamps or more complex models such as lanterns with the shape of 12 zodiac animals are all produced.
In particular, foldable bamboo lanterns are very popular because they are easy to transport. Depending on the size and sophistication, Hoi An lanterns cost around 100,000 VND each.
Hoi An lanterns with diverse designs and colors have attracted many customers from provinces and cities in the country to visit and shop for decorations during this year's Lunar New Year.
In addition to business, some Hoi An lantern manufacturing facilities also combine experiential tourism, where visitors can make their own lanterns under the guidance of artisans.
The brilliant lanterns further embellish the ancient and charming beauty of Hoi An ancient town, becoming a unique and indispensable cultural feature during the traditional Tet holiday of the nation.
