Bamboo pin sharpening job creates income for rural women

The bamboo pin shaving team in Phu Long hamlet, led by Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhanh, splits bamboo to shave pins.

In 2016, Ms. Tu Nhanh received orders to shave bamboo pins for a warehouse (about 300m from her house), delivering about 2,000 pins/week. According to Ms. Tu Nhanh, sometimes her hands were tired from shaving bamboo pins but could not meet the warehouse's technical standards, so she had to accept to take them home and burn them. The following year, Ms. Tu Nhanh searched for and connected with customers to consume shaved bamboo pins, then decided to accept orders and connect with women in Phu Long hamlet to process the products.

Ms. Tu Nhanh shared: “Currently, Phu Long hamlet has more than 15 households processing bamboo pins, with many different sources of consumption. Of which, the Bamboo Pin Processing Team, of which I am the team leader, has 10 participating households. I am in charge of managing the bamboo pin processing and the loan capital from the Provincial Economic Development Fund for Women (10 million VND/household/year)”.

First, the bamboo stapler must find bamboo sources inside and outside the province such as Dong Thap, Tra Vinh , Vinh Long... Mainly bamboo and Siamese bamboo or thorny bamboo. Then soak the bamboo in a pond, then scoop it up, split it and trim it according to actual requirements. After trimming, dry it, bundle it (100 staples/bundle) and deliver it to Mrs. Tu Nhanh (29 thousand VND/bundle). According to the processor, it is estimated that they split 16 pieces/day (equivalent to 4 trees), split 30 - 40 staples/piece, trim 400 - 500 staples/day, earning more than 100 thousand VND/day after deducting production investment costs.

“More than 2 years ago, I quit my job in Ho Chi Minh City and have been working on making bamboo pins for Mrs. Tu Nhanh ever since. In addition to housework and free time, I make more than 400 pins a day, earning over 100,000 VND,” said Mrs. Nguyen Thi The, 57 years old (Group NDTQ No. 5, Phu Long Hamlet).

Mrs. Tu Nhanh has a house in Gia Khanh hamlet, Hung Khanh Trung A commune, Mo Cay Bac district, which is a bamboo pin warehouse for delivery to customers in Mo Cay Nam district and Tien Giang and Tay Ninh provinces, as well as retail to local customers. Every week, she delivers 15,000 - 20,000 pins/customer, priced at 30,000 VND/100 pins. As for retail customers, she sells them at 35,000 VND/bundle (100 pins/bundle).

Vice President of the Women's Union of Hung Khanh Trung B Commune, Tran Thi Em, said: The bamboo pin sharpening processing model in Phu Long Hamlet has helped women take advantage of their free time to significantly increase their income.
