Previously, on June 24, Ms. NVBT (46 years old) unfortunately had a motorbike accident. When admitted to Gia Dinh People's Hospital, the woman was lethargic, vomiting a lot, and was diagnosed with multiple traumatic shock, severe traumatic brain injury, cerebral edema...
On June 28, the patient was declared brain dead despite the intensive care team's dedicated efforts to save her. In this situation, the family suppressed their grief and agreed to donate Ms. T's organs to save the lives of other patients in need of organ transplants.
The organ harvesting surgery took place in the early morning of June 29. The woman's heart was transferred to Hue Central Hospital for transplant, and the two kidneys were transplanted to two patients at Gia Dinh People's Hospital.
The first recipient was Mr. D.CP. Since discovering he had end-stage renal failure, Mr. P. was fired from his company. All the costs of dialysis were placed on his mother's shoulders.
The remaining recipient is Ms. NTHL. Four years ago, her husband left her when he learned that his wife was sick. She had to be the breadwinner of the family, supporting her son and elderly mother. Many days, she was busy going to dialysis, going to work and then coming home to take care of her family without daring to hope for a miracle to happen.
According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Toan, Head of the Department of Nephrology and Urology, Gia Dinh People's Hospital, after more than 10 days of surgery, both Mr. P. and Ms. L. recovered very well, overcoming the high-risk stage after the transplant.
Kidney function indicators are improving well, glomerular filtration rate has improved significantly. Both patients have had their catheters removed, are urinating on their own, have good appetites, the surgical wound is healing well, intravenous anti-rejection drugs have been stopped, and they have been switched to a maintenance regimen of oral medications.
"The two patients will be discharged in the next few days and will continue to be monitored regularly at the kidney transplant clinic," Dr. Toan shared.
Sharing after the transplant, Ms. L. burst into tears when she learned that she had a chance to live again. The woman expressed her deep gratitude to the organ donor and her family because from now on, she can live a healthy life, continue working to raise her children and take care of her elderly mother.
In the first 6 months of the year, Gia Dinh People's Hospital performed 4 kidney transplants from brain-dead donors.
Sharing about the two transplants, Dr. Mai Phan Tuong Anh, Deputy Director of Gia Dinh People's Hospital, emphasized that this is an important milestone in the field of organ transplantation at the hospital, aiming to perform liver transplant techniques in the future.
