The paradox of tourism in the West: Many visitors but low revenue

(NLDO)- The West is always in the group of markets that attract a large number of tourists, but the revenue contribution rate is not commensurate.

On July 8, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City organized a conference of tourism businesses and displayed and introduced tourism products to celebrate the 65th anniversary of Vietnam Tourism Day (July 9, 1960 - July 9, 2025).

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, spoke at the conference.

According to Ms. Le Dinh Minh Thy, Director of Vietravel Can Tho Branch, through tourism stimulus programs implemented synchronously in the Vietravel system, the results after the first 6 months of the year recorded 16,222 visitors to the West (an increase of 127% over the same period in 2024), revenue reached 43.7 billion VND (an increase of 144% over the same period).

The above data shows that the tourism market in the West in general and Can Tho in particular always has great appeal. The Western inter-route product is always in the top of the most favorite products of tourists when choosing products in the domestic market.

From a deeper perspective, when analyzing in detail the number of visitors and revenue, it can be seen that the West - including Can Tho - is always in the group of markets that attract a large number of visitors, but the revenue contribution rate is not commensurate.

Ms. Le Dinh Minh Thy, Director of Vietravel Can Tho Branch, talks about the paradox of a large number of tourists coming to the West but the revenue is not commensurate.

"Although the tour route in the West is at the top, the cost of paying for a tour product in the West is still low. This proves why the number of tourists to the West is in the top 6 but when calculating revenue, the route to the West falls out of the top 10. There are many tourists to the West and to Can Tho, but the revenue from those tourists paying for the tour is still limited," said Ms. Thy.

Concluding the conference, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep, Vice Chairwoman of Can Tho City People's Committee, suggested that the tourism industry needs to develop a plan to maximize potential, advantages, exploit tourism resources; and increase investment attraction to develop tourism types.

At the same time, improve service quality and competitiveness of tourism products; focus on linking and cooperating in tourism development with localities, promoting the central role of the region.

Lack of international flights to Can Tho

Mr. Truong Van Vinh - Director of IDO Travel Can Tho Trading Services and Events Company Limited, Permanent Vice President of Can Tho City Tourism Association - said that Can Tho currently has an international airport capable of receiving from 3 million to 5 million passengers/year, but currently there are very few flights to and from Can Tho.

"According to statistics, there are currently only 6 domestic routes, there are no stable international routes to bring passengers to Can Tho. We hope that the city's leaders will continue to work with airlines to increase flights to Can Tho to attract passengers to the West," Mr. Vinh suggested.
