From now until June 2026, the Department of Tourism will continue to coordinate with the management boards of ports in this area to finalize the application for a pilot plan to receive international tourist groups.
Ms. Thao stated that initially, this area was intended as a cargo port, not a passenger port. To accommodate passengers, the port's infrastructure and human resources must be prepared, especially given the increasing trend of cruise ship tourism; thorough preparation is even more necessary to meet demand.
The Department of Tourism will coordinate with travel agencies, related companies, port clusters, etc., to better prepare the necessary conditions for receiving international cruise ships. At the same time, they will consider adding more functionality to the fleet, not just conducting a pilot program.
Notably, following the direction of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the Department of Construction has coordinated with relevant departments and agencies to advise on priority investment projects for waterway transport and the formation of passenger ports.
In the period of 2026 - 2030, it is expected to invest in 3 international passenger port projects located in the old Vung Tau area and Khanh Hoi area, Ho Chi Minh City to meet the demand for cruise tourism.
Previously, according to authorities, Cai Mep - Thi Vai port cluster was identified as a general wharf area for containers, liquid/gas and bulk cargo, and had not been planned as a specialized wharf area to receive international passenger ships.
If the port wishes to receive passengers, it must complete the procedures to obtain an additional certificate of port operation in accordance with current regulations.
