How does the Premier League behave differently from the V-League?

VTC NewsVTC News11/04/2023

In the 2022/2023 season, Premier League referees made many basic mistakes despite being supported by VAR. In the match between Arsenal and Brentford (round 22 of the Premier League), VAR referee Lee Mason did not draw the offside line for Ivan Toney's controversial goal, causing Arsenal to be held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford. Mr. Mason only checked Ethan Pinnock and ignored Christian Norgaard - who committed an offside offense.

In response to the wave of criticism for that elementary mistake, the director of the Professional Game Regulation Authority (PGMOL), Mr. Howard Webb, apologized to Arsenal and announced that referee Lee Mason's contract had been terminated.

The team that has suffered the most from refereeing decisions this season is Brighton. The English refereeing authority has had to apologize to the team three times since December 2022.

In last weekend's game against Tottenham , Kaoru Mitoma was brought down by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the second half. Referee Stuart Attwell missed the foul. Although VAR referee Michael Salisbury reviewed the footage, the decision stood. PGMOL director Howard Webb admitted Brighton should have been awarded a penalty.

Previously, PGMOL had to publicly apologize to Brighton for VAR-related mistakes in the match against Aston Villa (December 8, 2022) and the match againstCrystal Palace (February 11). Although it cannot change the outcome of the match, this is the best way for PGMOL to appease the clubs and demonstrate openness, transparency and a spirit of learning.

Controversy in the match between Nam Dinh and Khanh Hoa in round 5 of V-League.

In the Premier League, teams have the right to complain about referees as long as they do so in the correct manner. It is not uncommon for English football managers and players to express their disagreement with referee decisions. However, these comments are not personal attacks, stereotypes or accusations against referees, because if they do so, the organizers and the Football Association (FA) will punish them. Liverpool midfielder Ryan Babel was fined £10,000 after posting a picture of referee Howard Webb wearing a Man Utd shirt on social media.

When frustrated with refereeing issues, English teams have a more civilized and useful solution. They file a complaint. The tournament organizers, as the referee hiring partners, will work with PGMOL to protect the clubs' interests. PGMOL will take note, then meet to consider, make a decision, then post a public announcement on the homepage and respond to the clubs.

Not only in the Premier League, the way refereeing issues are handled also shows the fairness and openness of the parties involved. In Scotland, head of the refereeing board Crawford Allan had to personally apologize to Kilmarnock coach Derek McInnes after the team lost a clear penalty.

The former President of the World Football Federation (FIFA), Mr. Sepp Blatter, had to personally apologize to the England and Mexico teams after the referee's mistakes at the 2010 World Cup. Eight years later, VAR was introduced to the biggest tournament on the planet.

Many people are concerned about the way the VFF referee board, headed by Mr. Dang Thanh Ha, handled the incident. Perhaps the behavior of PGMOL and FIFA is a suggestion for the heads of Vietnam's referee management agencies to publicly explain, and even apologize if necessary. Meanwhile, V-League teams should also learn to react in a civilized manner.
