At the foot of Chu Mui mountain, Lang Biang ward - Da Lat ( Lam Dong ), the Co Ho ethnic people have written a beautiful story about change. From the traditional way of growing coffee, they have linked up, switched to organic coffee production and successfully built the brand "Chu Mui Coffee" meeting 3-star OCOP standards, imbued with local cultural identity.

During the harvest season, the red color covers the premium Arabica coffee gardens at the foot of Chu Mui mountain. Thanks to the application of strict organic farming processes, the coffee beans of the gardens here are all large, round, uniform and of high quality.

Mr. Lieng Jrang Ha Hoang, the pioneer in building the brand, along with members of the Chu Mui Coffee Cooperative, are busy harvesting the main-season coffee. Each plump Arabica bunch is hand-picked, sorted on the spot, then dried and processed in the family's greenhouse. The entire process is strictly monitored to ensure organic standards. Mr. Ha Hoang said that since 2022, he has started making organic coffee and has linked up with 7 households in the area to have a large enough raw material area.

Previously, Ha Hoang and its associated households participated in the Café-REED project. The project helped members learn, equip themselves with techniques, and apply science and technology to coffee tree care, such as selecting varieties, planting trees, fertilizing, shaping canopy, pruning branches, and preventing pests and diseases. Members also received support in terms of equipment, finance, and market connections.

“We have confidently created a unique coffee product, produced and processed entirely by local ethnic minorities. Chu Mui coffee has become the pride of our community and inspired many others in the residential group as well as in remote areas to learn and improve the quality of coffee,” said Ha Hoang.

Currently, Mr. Ha Hoang's cooperative is producing two main coffee lines, Robusta and Arabica, with a total area of over 15 hectares in an organic direction. The average yield is 2.8 tons of beans per hectare. In addition to coffee beans, the cooperative also develops deep-processed products, such as coffee: paper filter, ready-to-drink powder, roasted and ground coffee... to meet the diverse needs of customers.

Thanks to that, Chu Mui organic coffee is sold at a higher price than traditional coffee, typically green coffee reaches 150,000 VND/kg; the average income value reaches 420 million VND/ha/year. In 2023, the product "Chu Mui Coffee" will be recognized as 3-star OCOP.

The Chu Mui Coffee Cooperative model not only brings high income, but also changes the production mindset of farmers here: from selling raw coffee at low prices to coffee with traceability, mastering the process and clearly understanding the value of the products they make. With the advantage of suitable soil and climate in the highlands and superior coffee quality, the land at the foot of Chu Mui mountain is increasingly attracting businesses to cooperate in consumption, helping people to both increase productivity and sell at good prices.

Mr. Lieng Hot Ha Diem, a member of the cooperative, said that his family has more than 2 hectares of Arabica coffee that is applying organic care processes, without using toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers, so productivity has increased and the selling price is higher: "When joining the cooperative, my family had a stable output, thanks to many associated companies and product consumption, each crop brought in hundreds of millions of dong in income."

The brand name “Chu Mui Coffee” originates from Chu Mui Mountain, which used to be a stopover for indigenous ethnic minorities on their journey up and down the plateau-plain to exchange for salt, food, etc. Today, the foot of Chu Mui Mountain has become one of the rare places where high-quality Arabica coffee is grown. Arabica coffee is the main crop, creating stable jobs and contributing to preserving the landscape and identity of the Lang Biang plateau.

Mr. Ho Cong Dinh, Vice Chairman of the Fatherland Front Committee, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Lang Biang Ward - Da Lat, said that the Chu Mui coffee production model is a bright spot in the socio -economic situation in the Co Ho ethnic minority area in the area. This is the result of people who dare to think, dare to do, change farming methods to create a coffee brand, improve agricultural products and bring high economic value to families as well as the community. "In the coming time, we will replicate the model, support more households to link production and consume organic coffee more sustainably," Mr. Dinh informed.

At the foot of Chu Mui mountain, the Co Ho people have produced quality specialty coffee beans and created a coffee brand imbued with the culture of the great forest, gradually spreading the "Chu Mui Coffee" brand to many domestic and international markets.
