Dr. Duong Quoc Viet, Head of the Infectious Diseases and Neurology Department at An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said: “The hospital is currently treating 10 dengue fever patients as inpatients. Currently, there is no specific cure for dengue fever; doctors treat patients according to the Ministry of Health 's protocol. This disease usually worsens on the 4th or 5th day. When a child's condition worsens on the 3rd day, the prognosis is very serious, requiring special care.”

From the beginning of the year until now, An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has received 823 outpatient dengue fever cases and admitted 552 inpatients, including 167 cases with warning signs and 97 severe cases. Doctor Viet shared: "Previously, the hospital received a small number of severe cases, and most patients were admitted early when symptoms were detected."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh, a resident of Long Xuyen ward, who is caring for her son at An Giang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said: “When I saw my son had a high fever, vomiting, and nosebleeds, my family took him to a private doctor for medication, but he didn't get better and the fever continued. I took him to the hospital for examination, and the results showed he had dengue fever. He has been hospitalized and is much better now.”

Ms. Tran Thi Nhi, a resident of Binh Duc ward, said: “My 14-year-old grandchild had a fever. My family bought fever-reducing medicine for her, but the fever kept going down and then coming back, and she had cold sweats on her hands and feet for several consecutive days. On the fifth day, my family took her to the hospital for examination, where she was diagnosed with dengue fever. After two days of treatment, her health has stabilized.”

To prevent and control dengue fever and avoid severe complications, Vietnamese doctors advise people to monitor their health. If they experience symptoms suspected of being dengue fever, such as sudden high fever, headache, rash, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or abdominal pain, they should promptly seek medical attention to avoid serious complications. They should also proactively get vaccinated against dengue fever.

Dr. Tran The Vinh, Director of the Provincial Center for Disease Control, said: “The province is strengthening the dengue fever surveillance system at all levels; organizing training courses to guide units and localities in monitoring, detecting, and handling dengue fever cases and outbreaks. We are stepping up communication to raise community awareness about the risk of dengue fever outbreaks and disease prevention and control measures. We encourage people to actively implement personal preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites; check water containers in and around their homes once a week and remove mosquito larvae when detected.”

Dr. Tran The Vinh advises that dengue fever is transmitted by mosquito bites, so the most effective way to prevent it is to avoid mosquito bites. People should wear long-sleeved shirts when working in gardens, fields, and during outdoor activities; use mosquito repellent incense and sprays; sleep under mosquito nets even during the day; keep houses well-ventilated; and avoid hanging sweaty clothes indoors to prevent attracting mosquitoes. Finding and destroying mosquito larvae to prevent them from becoming disease-transmitting mosquitoes is also very important. Measures to find and destroy larvae include releasing guppy fish into large water containers; regularly rinsing and cleaning water containers and other items holding clean water in the house; turning over items that may collect water around the house; and putting used oil residue and salt in the feet of ant traps and old tires, etc.

From the beginning of the year until now, the entire province has recorded 5,063 cases of dengue fever, a twofold increase compared to the same period in 2024; of which, An Cu commune accounted for 211 cases, Phu Quoc special zone 169 cases, and An Phu commune 165 cases. The province has recorded 1,632 outbreaks, including 74 outbreaks in Chau Doc ward, 61 outbreaks in Vinh Hau commune, and 60 outbreaks in An Phu commune.
