New symbol of the city

The project to build Passenger Terminal T2 - Cat Bi International Airport will officially start on August 19. The groundbreaking ceremony was selected by the Government as one of the national online bridges, showing the important significance of the project, not only for Hai Phong city but also for the development of the national airport network.

Passenger Terminal T1 - Cat Bi International Airport is performing well in its service role. However, the passenger traffic through Terminal T1 is currently far exceeding the initial design capacity (2 million passengers/year). Therefore, the construction of Passenger Terminal T2 - Cat Bi International Airport is an urgent requirement, meeting the needs of socio -economic development, tourism and international integration in the new period of Hai Phong city.

According to information from Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV): the project to build Passenger Terminal T2 - Cat Bi International Airport has a total investment of 2,689.8 billion VND from the capital of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV).

The project is built on an area of 23,200m2 , with a capacity of 5 million passengers/year (equivalent to 1,500 passengers/peak hour) and has a planned expansion plan to increase the capacity to 10 million passengers/year when needed. With this capacity, together with Terminal T1 (under study to expand to 3 million passengers/year), it will meet the goal of reaching a total port capacity of 13 million passengers/year by 2030.

Passenger Terminal T2 is designed with 2 floors above ground, separating the departure and arrival levels. Terminal T2 is connected to the aircraft parking area by 4 passenger bridges (including 3 code C bridges and 1 double bridge that can handle 1 code E aircraft or 2 code C aircraft at the same time).

Terminal T2 has 2 baggage check-in islands with 28 check-in counters (including 5 self-check-in counters), 14 check-in kiosks, 2 baggage handling conveyors and 3 baggage return conveyors. The auxiliary system includes M&E technical area, power station, Chiller station, wastewater treatment plant, parking lot, landscape, internal port traffic, lighting system, water supply and drainage... meeting international standards.

Given the urgency of the project, ACV strives to complete construction within 18 months from the date of full handover of the construction site. ACV is committed to working with consulting units and joint contractors to mobilize maximum resources, apply advanced management solutions, strictly comply with technical, safety and quality standards, and put the project into operation on schedule - quality - ensuring the highest efficiency.

After the project is completed and put into operation, Passenger Terminal T2 - Cat Bi International Airport will become a new symbol of Hai Phong city, becoming the leading aviation - logistics - tourism center in the region, realizing the aspiration of Hai Phong city to rise.

Many projects to "upgrade" Cat Bi Airport

In recent years, Hai Phong has made a breakthrough in road, maritime, waterway and air transport infrastructure. However, compared to the city's socio-economic development speed, Cat Bi International Airport has become "crowded" and overloaded. Meanwhile, along with Hai Phong seaport, Cat Bi International Airport is considered an important traffic gateway connecting Hai Phong with the region and the world.

In response to the demand for development, recently, ACV has implemented many investment, expansion and upgrading projects to "upgrade" Cat Bi International Airport.

Passenger terminal T2 is designed with 2 floors above ground, separate departure and arrival levels, with a capacity of 5 million passengers/year and a backup plan to expand to 10 million passengers/year.

Specifically, recently on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Liberation Day of Hai Phong - Heroic City (May 13, 1955 - May 13, 2025) and the Red Flamboyant Festival - Hai Phong 2025, ACV started construction of package No. 6 "Construction of the project to expand the aircraft parking lot of Cat Bi International Airport - Phase 2".

The aircraft parking expansion project - Phase 2 has a total investment of 1,151 billion VND, built on an area of 13.68 hectares, increasing the total number of parking positions to 28 Code C parking positions. In which, Phase 2 is divided into 2 investment phases: Phase 2.1: meeting 5 Code C aircraft parking positions; Phase 2.2: meeting 6 similar aircraft parking positions. With 11 additional aircraft parking positions, Cat Bi International Airport will improve its operational capacity, reduce overload, ensure flight safety and improve service quality.

Previously, in November 2024, ACV coordinated with the City People's Committee to organize the groundbreaking ceremony for the cargo terminal construction project at Cat Bi International Airport. The cargo terminal construction investment project at Cat Bi International Airport has a total investment of 724 billion VND. The capacity is 100,000 tons of cargo/year and the synchronous technical infrastructure system can be expanded up to 250,000 tons of cargo/year. The project will be completed and put into operation in January 2026.

With the breakthrough development, rising to the 3rd position nationwide in terms of economic scale of Hai Phong city after merging with Hai Duong province, Cat Bi International Airport will soon welcome many investors and tourists to the Port city, opening up many opportunities for cooperation and promoting the development of service and tourism industries.

On May 12, 2016, the Cat Bi International Airport expansion project was inaugurated. After the upgrade, Cat Bi Airport ensures 8 parking slots for A321 aircraft/peak hours and the terminal can handle 2 million passengers/year. At the same time, the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) decided to convert Cat Bi Airport into Cat Bi International Airport, officially welcoming international flights.
