Japan's new Agriculture Minister Ichiro Miyashita has expressed his desire to diversify export markets to reduce risks after China banned imports of Japanese seafood .
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has caused prices to skyrocket and caused shortages of fertilizer and food, and Japan has become heavily dependent on one market, according to Mr. Miyashita.
He said it is necessary to reduce risks to economic security. The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture will make efforts to ensure stable imports of food and raw materials.
China has banned imports of Japanese seafood after the country began discharging treated wastewater from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant into the sea.
Mr. Miyashita emphasized that the Japanese Government will maintain the target of increasing exports of agricultural, forestry, aquatic, marine products and food to 2,000 billion yen (13.5 billion USD) in 2025 and 5,000 billion yen in 2030, compared to 1,400 billion yen in 2022.
Japan wants to find markets where it can sell high-value goods most effectively and carry out trade promotion activities, he said.
Regarding weaker production bases, Mr. Miyashita said that Japan needs to boost its agricultural production system, which has been delayed./.
