According to Kyodo news agency, more than 51,000 people in the earthquake zone in 5 provinces in central Japan have been asked to evacuate urgently after a series of earthquakes this afternoon (January 1), including one with a magnitude of 7.6.
Suzu City in Ishikawa, the epicenter of the quake, said several buildings were damaged and confirmed injuries. Meanwhile, Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture confirmed that six people were buried in the rubble of collapsed houses after the quake.

Large-scale fires are breaking out in several locations in the city. Ishikawa Governor Hiroshi Hase has requested the Self-Defense Forces to send personnel to assist in disaster relief efforts.
According to images posted on social media, many roads and houses in Ishikawa Prefecture were damaged after the earthquake. Many houses collapsed in the Noto area and the city of Hakui, Ishikawa Prefecture. Local authorities said that about 32,500 households were without power there. Currently, East Japan Railway Company has suspended all Shinkansen services on the Joetsu and Hokuriku lines in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said the government was working to assess potential damage in affected areas. In a recent speech, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi urged people living in areas under tsunami warnings to evacuate to higher ground.
