Bustling search for electric motorbikes in Ho Chi Minh City

In recent days, streets specializing in two-wheeled vehicles such as Vo Thi Sau, Cong Hoa, Nguyen Oanh, An Duong Vuong... have always been bustling with people looking at vehicles, test driving, asking for prices and placing deposits to buy electric motorbikes.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tien, owner of an electric bike shop in Tan Thuan Ward, said that since the beginning of July, the number of customers has doubled. Previously, they only sold 1-2 bikes a month, but now there are 3-4 bikes a day. According to Mr. Tien, the customers are mainly parents buying for their children to go to school, workers, students, and office workers. Many technology drivers also come to survey the models and operating costs.

At the VinFast showroom in Tan Thuan ward, hundreds of cars of all colors are waiting to be delivered. Employees said the number of buyers has increased significantly since the information encouraging the conversion from gasoline cars to electric cars spread.

Tuoi Tre 's survey shows that the current supply is quite diverse in many price ranges. The popular segment of 15-20 million VND/unit, the 20-30 million VND segment and the 40-60 million VND segment are all available.

Besides VinFast and YADEA (Orla, ULike models...), many brands such as Dat Bike, Pega, Detech are also promoting new products. For example, Honda introduced the CUV e: imported from Thailand for rental services in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. At the same time, the company also launched the ICON e: domestically assembled model to compete in the segment under 30 million VND...

Dealers see the race not only in price but also in technology and design. Lithium battery vehicles are dominating the electric motorbike segment, with a common range of 70-80 km per charge, charging time of 8-10 hours. Factors of great interest include large trunks, phone charging ports, app connectivity, disc brakes with CBS/ABS systems, etc.

"Customers are now very practical. They calculate the daily distance, charging costs and ask very carefully about battery warranty and spare parts prices," said a dealer owner.

Despite the excitement, many stores admit that the "bottleneck" lies in supply and after-sales service. Some models are "out of stock", customers have to wait for new imports, not to mention customers are especially interested in battery policies, warranty periods, battery replacement costs, and components. According to dealers, most companies announce battery warranties of 18 months or more, but buyers still want to hear specific conditions before "paying".

Ho Chi Minh City plans to convert electric vehicles for technology drivers

The Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies has just submitted a project to convert all technology and delivery drivers currently using gasoline vehicles to electric vehicles, as part of the city's green transformation program by September 2025.

The project revolves around three pillars: 100% electrification of buses before 2030, piloting low-emission zones in Con Dao and Can Gio, and converting the service two-wheeled vehicle fleet according to a priority roadmap, with support for vulnerable groups.

Accordingly, the roadmap for 2025 will pilot and complete the technical standards policy framework. From 2026-2027, it will be expanded to wards, communes and vehicle groups, then replicated throughout the city.

Ho Chi Minh City also requires synchronization of power infrastructure, charging stations, battery swapping, parking lots and fire safety procedures; recommends preferential credit packages, programs to exchange gasoline cars for electric cars, consider exempting and reducing some initial fees, applying transparent charging electricity prices according to off-peak hours...
