Vietnamese tourists' demand for foreign travel increases the highest in Southeast Asia

Demand for foreign tourism in Southeast Asia has increased sharply compared to before the pandemic, in which demand from Vietnamese tourists increased by 170% in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2019.

According to an announcement from Google on August 30, Southeast Asian tourism continues to grow steadily despite having passed the initial stage of "revenge tourism", a term used to describe tourists flocking to different places after having to stay at home for too long.

Accordingly, the demand for overseas travel (measured by the level of interest and searches of users on Google Search for air tickets and accommodation) of Southeast Asian tourists exceeded the 2019 level for the last 4 consecutive quarters. Vietnam is the country with the highest growth rate. In the second quarter alone, the demand of Vietnamese people traveling abroad increased by 175% compared to the same period before the pandemic. The demand of citizens of the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore is assessed as "growing steadily every quarter", reaching an increase of more than 50 to more than 100%.

Google Search data also shows that more than 65% of Vietnamese searches are aimed at destinations within Southeast Asia, followed by Malaysians and Singaporeans, with more than 50%. Meanwhile, Thais and Filipinos are less interested in regional travel, with 23-28% of searches targeting Southeast Asia. The destinations outside the region that Vietnamese tourists are most interested in are Australia, Japan, India and the US. On the other hand, Southeast Asia is the favorite destination for tourists from the US, Australia and India.

Southeast Asians travel most during the festive seasons. For Vietnamese, it is the Lunar New Year. Beaches are the most popular destination globally, especially for Asia- Pacific travelers. Denpasar, Indonesia and Bangkok, Thailand, were ranked as the top global city destinations at 10th and 11th.

Destinations in Southeast Asia are also increasingly popular with international visitors. In the beach category, the top five favorites are Kupang Indonesia, Mersing Malaysia, Bang Sak Thailand, SantaFe Philippines and Quy Nhon Vietnam. For tourists who want to explore culture, heritage and history, they want to go to Bukittinggi Indonesia, Tawau Malaysia, Ban Saeo Thailand, San Fernando Philippines and Vinh, Vietnam. The top four most popular scenic destinations include Lembang Indonesia, Bentong Malaysia, Na Suan Thailand and Ha Long Bay Vietnam.
