The Axis 1 - Northwest Project (section from Ho Tung Mau Street to Highway 1 intersection) started construction in 2020, is a key traffic project connecting the city center with the northwest region, an area oriented for industrial, urban and logistics development. After the land acquisition problems were resolved in early 2025, people expected the project to revive. However, the reality has not been as expected.
Mr. Do Van Nam (Group 12, Lien Chieu Ward) shared: “My family handed over the land in March, and demolished our house to make way for the road, just hoping to stabilize our lives soon. But until now, the project is still in progress, affecting people’s lives.”
Mr. Nguyen Tan Luu (Group 14, Lien Chieu Ward) said: "We handed over the land early so that the project could be completed quickly, but unexpectedly it took so long. The sewers are not finished yet, the water is stagnant, and there are many flies and mosquitoes. The Bau Vang lake area was temporarily filled to make a road, if it rains heavily, the households around the lake will definitely be flooded."
Records at the construction site show that at some points such as the intersection of Axis 1 - Northwest with Highway 1, machinery and workers are still working. However, the section from Ho Tung Mau Street to the North - South Railway (about 150m long) is still "inactive" because some households have not yet completed the demolition of their houses.
Ms. Le Thi Lan, a small business owner near the construction site, lamented: “Everyone supports the road construction, but if it is too slow, people cannot stand it. It is muddy when it rains, dusty when it is sunny, and business is sluggish.”
Delayed construction not only affects people's lives but also causes the city to miss the infrastructure investment milestone.
The parties pledged to accelerate
According to the Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects for Transport and Agricultural Works of Da Nang City, the Axis 1 - Northwest project is currently divided into three construction phases: the section from the North - South railway to Ho Tung Mau; the section from National Highway 1 to Nguyen Chanh Street; the middle section from Nguyen Chanh to the railway (about 800m long). The Management Board has asked contractors to mobilize more human resources and equipment, taking advantage of favorable weather to speed up drainage and roadbed items, striving to complete the entire route by early 2026.

Mr. Lam Vu, Project Director of Axis 1 - Northwest (Management Board of Investment and Construction Projects for Traffic and Agricultural Works of Da Nang City) said: "According to the direction of the City People's Committee, the project must be completed by March 2026. We are focusing on directing, regularly inspecting the site, urging contractors to construct, taking advantage of every sunny day to make up for the delay."
However, according to Mr. Vu, the construction process encountered many difficulties due to weak geology in the Bau Tram lake area, where the ground needs to be carefully treated to ensure the quality of the project.
In addition, the section from Ho Tung Mau to the North-South railway still has about 12 households, although they have signed the site handover minutes, but have not yet completely dismantled the structures, making it impossible for the contractor to synchronously deploy underground infrastructure items.
“The Board is coordinating with Hoa Khanh Ward and the Land Fund Development Center of Region 5 to continue to mobilize and support people to demolish their houses. The goal is to complete the main drainage system before the rainy season, avoid local flooding and create conditions for the next items,” Mr. Vu emphasized.
On the local government side, Mr. Huynh Anh Vu, Chairman of Hoa Khanh Ward People's Committee, said: "The ward is focusing on propagating and mobilizing the remaining households to comply with the handover of the site, and at the same time closely coordinating with the investor and the construction unit to make the most of favorable weather to speed up drainage and roadbed projects, and soon reduce flooding in residential areas."
Representatives of Trung Nam Construction Investment Joint Stock Company, the main contractor, also committed to mobilizing more human resources and equipment, working overtime day and night, taking full advantage of sunny weather to speed up, avoiding the risk of interruption when entering the rainy season.
Axis 1 - Northwest is considered the city's strategic traffic infrastructure route, playing a role in expanding urban space to the northwest, connecting the center with Hoa Khanh industrial park, Lien Chieu port and Northwest urban area.
When completed, the route will reduce the load on current main traffic axes such as Nguyen Luong Bang and Ton Duc Thang. The route also opens up a quick connection between the city center and the seaport, industrial parks and new urban areas, creating a driving force for socio -economic development, industry - services - logistics for the northwest region.
