Notes when retaking an IELTS skill

Specifically, the British Council and IDPEducation have recently opened registration for the One Skill Retake (OSR) feature for IELTS. According to the British Council, the privilege of taking the IELTS test on computer at the British Council is that you can choose to retake one of the four skills of the IELTS test including: Listening - Speaking - Reading - Writing. This is an opportunity to improve your IELTS score to the maximum without having to retake the entire test.

Candidates who have taken the IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days of taking the first 3 skills test; Have or are preparing to take the IELTS One Skill Retake. The test will start from April 14.

In particular, according to the announcement of the British Council and IDP Education Organization, the OSR exam fee is 2,940,000 VND. The most popular exam is IELTS Academic with a fee of 4,664,000 VND/time. Therefore, the fee for retaking a skill is 63% of the fee for taking all 4 skills.

It is known that the IELTS retest feature was first introduced in Australia in November 2022 and has now been deployed in 112 countries and territories around the world ; including Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Regarding the British Council and IDP Education Organization starting to open registration for the feature of retaking an IELTS skill, many experts said that this feature creates an opportunity for candidates to improve their skills if they make mistakes in the first test due to health and psychological factors; at the same time, it helps candidates save time by only focusing on one skill, especially in the final stage of reviewing for the current admission season.

However, candidates should avoid being subjective when taking the IELTS test because they think that there is still a backup plan which is to retake a skill. In addition, when choosing to retake the test, candidates need to clearly identify their real weaknesses in terms of language and test-taking skills, from which they can have a study method and build a review plan to retake the test and achieve the desired results.

In addition, experts also note that, according to regulations, candidates can only choose to retake one skill, not all four skills. Therefore, candidates should clearly understand the retake registration process and the requirements from the test organizer. At the same time, consider the cost and time of retaking one skill compared to retaking the entire test or reviewing the results to choose the most suitable form.

On the other hand, candidates need to understand clearly if they want to use the IELTS retest score to apply to universities at home and abroad, to avoid wasting time and effort in case the educational institution does not accept the retest result.

In fact, in Vietnam, the IELTS test is currently recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training to consider exemption from the high school graduation exam in English. Meanwhile, many universities also use IELTS certificates for admission, by converting according to their own scale and combining them with their academic records, graduation exam scores or competency assessment scores.

Therefore, in order for retaking an IELTS skill to be a real opportunity to improve IELTS scores, candidates need to carefully study the regulations of the retesting organization, as well as the university training institutions.
