This morning, May 26, the University and Enterprise Connection Forum, organized by the Ministry of Education and Training in coordination with the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, took place at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. This is an activity within the framework of the Vietnam-Australia Human Resource Development Program for the period 2021-2025, attracting the participation of leaders of many universities.

Dr. Pham Nhu Nghe, Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education , spoke at the forum this morning.

Fields where over 90% of graduates have jobs

At the workshop, Dr. Pham Nhu Nghe, Deputy Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), shared about the employment situation of students after graduation in the period of 2017-2021 and proposed solutions for the period of 2023-2026.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, the employment rate of students after graduation in recent years is as follows: 90.13% in 2018; 86.68% in 2019; 90.69% in 2020 and 90.52% in 2021.

In 2021, the training fields with a student employment rate below 90% include: educational sciences and teacher training; law; life sciences , natural sciences ; veterinary medicine; tourism, hotels, sports and personal services; transportation services; architecture and construction.

Meanwhile, some fields leading the employment rate of students are: environment and environmental protection at 96.3%; agriculture, forestry and fisheries 95.7%; arts 95.5%...

Specifically, the employment situation of students after 12 months of graduation from 2018-2021 is as follows:

Dr. Nghe said that the rate of students having jobs after 12 months is not low; many schools and many majors are above 90%. However, the survey is in its early stages so it has not been possible to analyze whether students have jobs in their field of study and stable salaries.

Since 2016, the Ministry of Education and Training has instructed and required higher education institutions to annually survey and report to the Ministry on the employment situation of students within 12 months after being recognized as graduates. The survey results are regularly updated in the common software system of the Ministry of Education and Training.

"It cannot be said that the school is prestigious if the employment rate of students is low"

Dr. Pham Nhu Nghe acknowledged: "To evaluate the quality of a university, there are many different criteria, but I think one important criterion is the rate of graduates having jobs. It cannot be said that a prestigious university has a low employment rate of its students."

However, according to Mr. Nghe, in reality in Vietnam this rate is not high in some training fields and the reason comes from both the training institutions and the labor market. In terms of training, the quality of university education is still modest, many student majors do not meet output requirements, and do not meet the needs of businesses.

Universities must report the rate of students having jobs after 12 months of graduation.

In addition, cooperation between universities and businesses is not effective. According to Dr. Nghe, in 2021, the Ministry of Education and Training surveyed 130 universities, with each school cooperating with 60 different businesses on average, but the cooperation efficiency is not high, mainly stopping at contacting businesses to send students for internships.

On the other hand, the Government has stipulated that local ministries and sectors have plans for human resource development, but universities find it difficult to find this data. Among the many solutions proposed, Mr. Nghe said that universities must be more proactive.

Currently, Vietnam has about 50 million people of working age, of which university graduates account for approximately 12%. Dr. Nghe commented that the labor market still has many limitations, and in reality, the number of new jobs created each year is often lower than the number of graduates. This is also one of the reasons why it is difficult for students in some majors to find jobs after graduation.
