Join hands to build a warm home

In an old house of about 10 square meters in Tu Ky commune, Ms. Nguyen Thi Khuya, a single mother raising a young child, has gone through many years of hardship. Each month, she and her child rely on family support and a small income from collecting scrap. The dream of a more spacious and cleaner house for her and her child is a distant dream.

Ms. Khuya expressed: “My parents gave me a piece of land, but I cannot afford to build a house. I hope that the Vietnam Fatherland Front of the city and the local government, units and businesses will create favorable conditions to support the construction of a house so that my mother and I can soon have our own home.”

Khuya's wish is also that of hundreds of households in the city who still have difficulty with housing. Such as the household of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Trai, born in 1957, in Lieu Trang Residential Group, Tan Hung Ward. Mrs. Trai has a serious congenital disability, poor eyesight, poor health, and often needs medical treatment. She is living with her son, a freelance worker, in a 25 m², seriously degraded level 4 house with cracked walls and a leaky roof.

Understanding that difficulty, from the city's "For the Poor" Fund, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the city surveyed and supported many households like Ms. Khuya and Ms. Trai to repair and build new houses.

At the groundbreaking ceremony for the Great Unity House on the morning of November 17, Mrs. Trai expressed her emotions when her long-time dream became a reality. In addition to the funding support from the Fatherland Front, the remaining funds were mobilized from relatives, clans and the help of the people of the residential group to help Mrs. Trai build a new house of nearly 50 square meters.

Sharing the same joy, Ms. Nguyen Thi Y, who has a particularly difficult situation in Dai Tra Hai village, Kien Minh commune, also received funding from the Vietnam Fatherland Front of the city to support the construction of a Great Unity house, replacing the degraded house. Previously, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Kien Minh commune coordinated with Dai Tra Hai village to review and request the City's "For the Poor" Fund Mobilization Committee to support the construction of a Great Unity house. Along with that, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Kien Minh commune mobilized the attention and cooperation of the government, along with the family and clan to help Ms. Y's family soon stabilize their housing and improve their lives. The house that started construction has an area of 30 m2 , with a total cost of about 150 million VND.

Motivation towards new goals

On the occasion of the "For the Poor" Peak Month in 2025 taking place from October 17 to November 18, commemorating the 95th anniversary of the Vietnam Fatherland Front's Traditional Day and looking forward to the 1st Congress of the Vietnam Fatherland Front of Hai Phong City, term 2025 - 2030, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the city plans to support the construction of 190 Great Unity houses. The total support cost is 19 billion VND from the city's "For the Poor" Fund. Each household is supported with 100 million VND to build a solid house, with a minimum area of 30 m2 , ensuring the "3 hard" criteria: hard foundation, hard wall frame, hard roof.

Not only at the city level, in many localities, activities to support the construction and repair of Great Solidarity houses have been actively implemented, mobilizing the participation and response of all levels, sectors, units, businesses and philanthropists.

According to the Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Kien Thuy Commune, Luong Thi Ngan, the commune still has 163 near-poor households and many households with housing difficulties. This time, the locality received financial support from the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the city to build 3 Great Unity houses, of which 1 house was inaugurated in November. The valuable thing is that in addition to the support from the city, the government and local people joined hands to contribute working days to clean up and provide additional funding for construction, demonstrating the spirit of mutual love. This is the motivation for the locality to continue to mobilize and support households in difficulty to have stable housing.

Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Cat Hai Special Zone Vu Thi My Lien informed that in the period of 2024 - 2025, as the chair of the "For the Poor" Fund, the Vietnam Fatherland Front in the Special Zone actively implemented social security work, supporting more than 1,500 people, with a total budget of nearly 3 billion VND. The Fatherland Front and its member organizations mobilized social resources to build and repair 15 houses for households with especially difficult housing circumstances...

Along with that, the joint efforts of the business community and philanthropists continue to contribute to building new homes. Deputy General Director of Van Huong Investment and Tourism Joint Stock Company Vu Tien Thuy Duong said that the company has just mobilized and connected with philanthropists to donate 40 million VND to support house building and give gifts to disadvantaged households in Nam Do Son ward. In the coming time, the company will continue to call on officers, employees in the company and partners to participate in volunteering to help many vulnerable cases in society.

With that spirit, from 2024 to present, the city's Fatherland Front at all levels has supported the construction and repair of 1,929 Great Solidarity houses with a total cost of 116.4 billion VND; and presented more than 340,700 gifts, worth more than 370.2 billion VND.

In the 2025 - 2030 term, Hai Phong aims to have no more poor households by 2028. And the Great Unity houses are the driving force to arouse the will to rise up and get rich legitimately of people in difficult circumstances as well as to consolidate and promote the strength of great national unity to realize the goal of making Hai Phong a city of sustainable development, civilization and humanity.
