Environmentalists - Part 2: Teaching and learning about wildlife conservation

Việt NamViệt Nam30/10/2024

In wildlife conservation classes, the lecturers are experts and the lesson plans are real-life experiences. The “teachers” not only impart knowledge but also inspire and orient young people towards different directions and more specialized fields of work in the conservation industry. From there, students have the opportunity to learn and upon graduation can immediately participate in wildlife conservation and biodiversity work.

Accessing and acquiring knowledge from experts on wildlife conservation and biodiversity; visiting Son Tra peninsula, having the opportunity to directly see the Red-shanked Douc Langur to better understand the habits of wild animals and how to protect wild animals are the experiences of more than 200 young people at the training class on research skills on Vietnamese primates with the theme "Protecting wild animals".

The training course was jointly organized by the City Union of Science and Technology Associations, the Green Viet Biodiversity Conservation Center and the Faculty of Biology and Environment, Da Nang University of Education at the end of September 2024.

Assessing the level of understanding of young people about wildlife and biodiversity conservation, MSc. Tran Huu Vy - Director of Green Viet shared that he was quite surprised that the students had a lot of knowledge about wildlife and saw the youthfulness and passion inside each of them.

“That is why, in addition to training, we provide students with some necessary skills and knowledge so that when they graduate, they will have the opportunity to immediately participate in environmental protection, wildlife protection, and biodiversity conservation. Not only that, the skills we equip students with can also be applied to many other professions because any profession that contributes to the development of society can contribute to environmental protection and wildlife protection,” shared Master Tran Huu Vy, Director of Green Viet.

In particular, this training course organized for students to visit Son Tra peninsula and Green Viet'sEducation and Nature Experience Center - a place considered as a miniature Son Tra peninsula.

“We organize field trips because on the way to Son Tra peninsula, you will be able to directly “touch” nature and feel the diversity of flora and fauna, arousing your love for nature and protecting wildlife. Moreover, we also want to show you the reality of the conflict between monkeys and humans on Son Tra peninsula. Through that, you will raise your own awareness and become propagandists, calling on the community to stop feeding monkeys when visiting here,” said Mr. Tran Huu Vy.

Having attended many training courses on wildlife protection and had the opportunity to go to Son Tra peninsula, Tran Yen Nhi (student of Da Nang University of Education) is always excited to once again access new knowledge.

"Participating in the hands-on experience on Son Tra Peninsula, I got to see wildlife with my own eyes, especially the Red-shanked Douc Langur. Through each trip, I understand why we have to protect the Red-shanked Douc Langur and wildlife on Son Tra Peninsula. And I think every young person can participate in contributing to the conservation and preservation of wildlife on Son Tra Peninsula, especially those majoring in biodiversity," Yen Nhi shared.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, since the beginning of 2024, wild animals have been continuously discovered in residential areas in Hoa Vang district, Cam Le district and some central districts of the city. A good sign is that people have become more aware and immediately cooperated with authorities to protect and release them back into the natural environment, improving the effectiveness of protecting wild animals and conserving biodiversity.

Implementing the project "Conservation of red-shanked douc langurs in Da Nang through community awareness education" sponsored by Synchronicity Earth (UK), in October 2024, Da Nang University of Education coordinated with the Department of Education and Training, the Green Viet Biodiversity Conservation Center (Green Viet) to organize a training course to improve the capacity of organizing teaching and learning integrating local biodiversity knowledge in natural science subjects, career guidance and local education experiences for 100 teachers of grades 6 and 8 at secondary schools in the city.

At the training course, scientists and experts provided students with knowledge about nature and biodiversity of Da Nang city; integrated knowledge of local nature and biodiversity into natural science subjects, local educational activities and career guidance activities;...

Guidance on developing skills in organizing practical classes on nature and biodiversity for a large number of students, especially implementing learning and experiencing nature and biodiversity at Son Tra peninsula.

In particular, teachers are instructed to exploit resources from the Danang Nature website (https://thiennhiendanang.vn/) to serve teaching, imparting knowledge and organizing educational activities for students.

The Da Nang Nature website currently has more than 3,000 photos, videos, documents... about the nature, environment, and biodiversity of Da Nang. The content on the website is divided into 6 groups: Son Tra peninsula, red-shanked douc langur, Ba Na - Nui Chua Nature Reserve, Nam Hai Van special-use forest, Da Nang marine ecosystem and pond, lake, and river ecosystems.

Currently, the Center for Learning Resources and Information Technology of Danang University of Education and Green Viet are cooperating to develop the content of this website.

“The school plans to incorporate the Da Nang Nature website into its lectures, helping students access, understand and apply it to their teaching and learning activities after graduation. At the same time, the school will also mobilize lecturers and students to contribute materials to the site with the sustainable goal of building this website into an electronic library serving natural science subjects for both teachers and students at all levels, linking education with local realities from preschool to university,” Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Minh Ly - Head of the Department of Science and International Cooperation (Da Nang University of Education) informed.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Tinh (Green Viet staff): “Integrating knowledge about nature and biodiversity in the city into the secondary school curriculum will gradually help form and develop students’ capacity and qualities; raise awareness about nature and the value of biodiversity in Da Nang city. Thereby, helping students realize their sense of responsibility and proper behavior in protecting nature and conserving biodiversity where they live”.

Those working in the field of wildlife and biodiversity conservation always worry and hope to pass on their “professional passion” to many young people so that wildlife conservation will become more and more popular, contributing positively to the work of protecting the diversity of wild nature, towards sustainable development.
