Farmers sell rice but can't get money

After being forced to pay higher prices by rice brokers and traders, farmers now have to sit still because purchasing enterprises are slow in paying for rice.

Although the current rice price has decreased compared to the time before Tet, it is still higher than the average of many years. However, the people who directly produce the rice, the farmers, have not benefited much. After being forced to pay the price by "rice brokers", traders, and depositors, farmers now have to sit still because the purchasing enterprises are slow in paying for the rice.

After harvesting the winter-spring rice crop about half a month ago, out of trust, Mr. Phan Van Quan - Co Do district, Can Tho city delivered all the rice to the enterprise right in the field. However, up to now, he has not received the money. With about 7 hectares, the amount of money he owes is up to hundreds of millions.

Mr. Quan sadly said that they got to know each other through selling rice. The company promised to pay many times but still did not pay. Now, he really hopes that the company will quickly pay for the rice.

Having finished harvesting the previous crop and planted the next crop, many households have yet to receive payment for their rice. According to the people, most of the rice acreage in Co Do district is purchased by a local enterprise. Small households owe tens of millions of dong. Large households owe up to billions of dong. Every day, people can only wait for information from the "rice brokers."

Mr. Nguyen Van Phen - Co Do District, Can Tho City shared that the company has not paid him more than 1 billion VND for rice sales and he himself does not know how to get the money. Mr. Nguyen Van Chien - Co Do District, Can Tho City is also in the same situation of owing money for rice. He said: "We have not filed a lawsuit yet, but if we do not pay this week, we will give each other advice and we will have to file a lawsuit."

Farmers being owed rice money is not uncommon in the Mekong Delta at the moment. The Winter-Spring crop has the largest output of the year, accounting for 50% of the total harvest of the Mekong Delta. Meanwhile, domestic enterprises are facing a common situation of capital difficulties.

Mr. Hoang Trong Thuy - Former Editor-in-Chief of Nong Thon Ngay Nay Newspaper commented: "Banks and credit institutions should promote early lending to businesses. When people have enough capacity to export, businesses have enough potential, first, they will try to buy, second, when people buy, the rice fields will also be harvested and farmers will be excited, willing to sell their rice."

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, this year, the world's demand for rice is still greater than the supply. However, capital difficulties are making it difficult for domestic enterprises to purchase rice. Therefore, being flexible and cutting unnecessary procedures to help the rice industry access capital is necessary at this time.
