.vn domain name - National symbol in cyberspace

The National Strategy for the Development of the Digital Economy and Digital Society to 2025, with a Vision to 2030, issued by the Prime Minister on March 31, 2022, identifies the national domain name “.vn” as one of the important targets that must be achieved. Universalizing the domain name “.vn” will contribute to ensuring national sovereignty in cyberspace, as affirmed in Resolution No. 57 dated December 22, 2024 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation.

National domain name “.vn”: Recognition - trust - safety

The Internet is the foundation for global social activities, promoting economic growth, encouraging innovation, connecting and creating many opportunities for billions of people around the world. In the digital age, domain names are used in most transactions, connections and services on the Internet. Country code domain names are the most obvious parameter representing the image and national brand on the Internet. Internet services using country domain names, such as websites and emails, have high recognition and trust factors. This is the factor representing national identification on the Internet.

In Vietnam, the Ministry of Information and Communications (now the Ministry of Science and Technology), with the Vietnam Internet Center as the focal point, is responsible for managing and granting domain names to agencies, organizations and enterprises in Vietnam. With the state as the managing entity, the national domain name “.vn” is a national resource, ensuring legitimacy and authenticity; it is a means of expressing the image of individuals, organizations and enterprises on the Internet. The domain name “.vn” was developed in the context of infrastructure, content and technology services all owned by Vietnamese people, becoming a very good platform and a means used to deploy public services to convey information of state agencies, business activities of enterprises, press information, information of people, agencies, organizations and individuals in Vietnam. The national domain name “.vn” of Vietnam and the services, information and content using the domain name “.vn” demonstrate Vietnam's sovereignty over the intellectual property of Vietnamese people.

According to the Vietnam Internet Center, the number of national domain names “.vn” has increased in each period. In 2000, there were nearly 1,000 domain names, in 2010 it was 100,000; in 2019 it was 500,000. To date, the number of “.vn” domain names has reached about 660,000, ranking 2nd in Southeast Asia, 10th in the Asia-Pacific region, and 40th globally. The national domain name “.vn” has become an important indicator of the prestige and reliability of a website and enhances the value of brand recognition for Internet users in Vietnam.

Director of Vietnam Internet Center Nguyen Hong Thang affirmed that with the values: Identification - trust - safety, the national domain name ".vn" is not only a symbol of trust, safety, national identity in the digital space, but also an effective bridge between businesses and customers, between the Government and citizens; thereby expanding opportunities and enhancing interactions in all areas of social life.

Popularizing national domain names to all people

To strongly promote digital transformation, develop digital government, digital economy and digital society, the Ministry of Information and Communications (now the Ministry of Science and Technology ) issued Decision No. 826/QD-BTTTT dated May 21, 2024, approving the program "Promoting and supporting people, businesses, and business households to have a reliable and safe online presence with digital services using the national domain name .vn in provinces and cities across the country in the period 2024 - 2025" (referred to as "Online presence program with the national domain name ".vn").

This is an initiative to popularize the national domain name “.vn” with two special policies: free 2 years of domain name “biz.vn” along with basic digital services such as setting up a website, email for newly established businesses within 1 year and for individual business households. This policy aims to encourage small and medium enterprises and individual business households to quickly establish their online presence in the digital environment, do business in the digital environment, and develop the digital economy. In addition, free 2 years of domain name “id.vn” along with basic digital services such as setting up a website, online diary, job application when looking for a job, email for people aged 18 - 23 years. This policy aims to encourage the young generation to quickly establish their online presence in the digital environment, developing the digital society.

Registering a “.vn” domain name can be done simply and easily with 4 steps: Access the website tenmien.vn, type in the search bar your domain name and field; select the domain name biz.vn or id.vn you want to register; select the appropriate registrar; provide subject authentication information to own the domain name.

Implementing the Program, the Vietnam Internet Center applies artificial intelligence (AI) to domain name registration and management activities, helping to optimize the process and support users to register domain names that suit their actual needs. The Center also cooperates with universities to develop an AI system to monitor and detect early acts of domain name abuse, thereby taking timely preventive measures. Domain name registration and management services are provided with a simple, automated process.

In remote areas, where the biggest barrier is the limited digital skills of the people, the Center coordinates with local authorities and the Department of Science and Technology to apply the pilot method and then expand it. Dong Thap has become a successful example in popularizing the national domain name "biz.vn" to each business household. Thanks to thorough training, members of the Community Digital Technology Team have a firm grasp of the benefits and values of the ".vn" domain name, accompanying digital services, and the operation of using technical tools to support the survey of the registration and use needs of the national domain name "biz.vn" of business households. With the motto of "going to every alley, knocking on every door", not only providing theoretical guidance, they directly interact with each business household in a "hands-on" manner, helping them step by step choose to register the biz.vn domain name, get acquainted with digital technology to set up services accompanying the domain name. As a result, in Dong Thap, 8,000 business households have registered websites.

The program aims to have at least 400,000 “id.vn” and “biz.vn” domain names and digital services registered for use in the 2024-2025 period, and at least 1 million “.vn” domain names by 2025. Director of the Vietnam Internet Center Nguyen Hong Thang shared that the program creates conditions for each individual and organization to have a website with the national domain name “.vn” to build personal/business brands, increase trust, safety and affirm identity on the Internet. Thereby, it not only contributes to the development of the Internet domestically and globally but also increases job and business opportunities, contributing to the development of the digital economy and digital society.
