Quang Tri farmers face the risk of crop failure due to leaf rollers

QTO - After the severe impact of storm No. 1, farmers in many localities across the province had to re-sow the summer-autumn rice crop. Not only did they face difficulties due to high prices of seeds and fertilizers, they continued to face the risk of crop failure when pests and diseases caused widespread damage.

Having just sprayed pesticides not long ago, Mr. Nguyen Khien, in Dien Sanh commune, had to continuously go out to the fields to check his rice fields. His family had 4 hectares of rice fields that were completely damaged by the impact of storm No. 1. After the second planting, when the rice started to bloom, some pests appeared, such as leaf rollers, brown planthoppers, and rice blast... which made him worried.

“There are too many pests this year. They develop very quickly, causing serious damage to the rice. I am considering spraying pesticides again if there are still pests. We farmers are worried that this season there are too many pests, the yield will decrease, and the crop will fail,” Mr. Khien said.

Mr. Khien is not an isolated case. It is known that this summer-autumn crop, Thien Tay Cooperative, Dien Sanh Commune, had to replant about 200 hectares of rice, but during the care process, pests and diseases appeared on a large scale, farmers were at high risk of crop failure.

To promptly eradicate pests, the cooperative's leadership has announced a specific plan for spraying pesticides to cooperative members through the loudspeaker system and Zalo platform. Director of Thien Tay Cooperative Bui Truong said that, following the direction of the Department of Agriculture and Environment and the Plant Protection Station, the cooperative's leadership has actively directed people to conduct preventive spraying. "Cooperative members have sprayed pesticides for the first time. We have directed people to regularly check the fields to ensure the highest yield for this summer-autumn crop," Mr. Truong informed.

In Nam Cua Viet commune, pests have attacked rice fields, causing mottled gray and white patches. The whole commune currently has more than 300 hectares infected with pests. According to Dang Duy Bang, Head of the Economic Department, Nam Cua Viet Commune People's Committee, the unusual weather, heavy rain and sunshine create humidity, favorable for pests and diseases to develop. Heavy rain also affects spraying, reducing the quality of prevention after spraying.

Mr. Bang affirmed: “The locality has advised people to regularly visit the fields, detect early and promptly spray pesticides according to the instructions of the professional sector. The Commune People's Committee also coordinates with functional sectors, closely monitors the development of pests, and is ready to provide technical support and materials when necessary to minimize damage to this year's summer-autumn rice crop.”

According to statistics, in the summer-autumn crop of 2025, the whole province planted 38,792 hectares of rice. However, the impact of storm No. 1 caused 14,000 hectares to be re-sown. Many types of insects are currently appearing in the fields. Of these, over 3,000 hectares are affected by leaf rollers, causing white leaves at high density; 1,000 hectares are affected by brown planthoppers; 135 hectares are damaged by spider mites...

If not prevented in time, the entire above-mentioned area will have reduced productivity, even total loss. Recently, the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Quang Tri province has recommended and sent staff to support and guide farmers right in the fields. At the same time, it regularly monitors and promptly informs people when other harmful pests appear in the fields.

Speaking to reporters, Tran Minh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Quang Tri province, said that, in the face of the complicated developments of pests and diseases on rice plants, the relevant agencies recommend that farmers regularly visit the fields, detect early and promptly spray pesticides according to the instructions of the specialized agencies, in which priority is given to the use of specialized pesticides to treat leaf rollers and brown planthoppers. Thereby, proactively protecting production, maintaining rice productivity and quality, minimizing damage in this year's summer-autumn rice crop.

“During the days from August 10-20, the professional sector and local authorities will thoroughly instruct farmers to focus on mobilizing all forces to spray pesticides to kill pests, especially new leaf rollers. When spraying pesticides, it is necessary to spray the correct dosage and at the right time to completely eliminate pests and protect the leaves. People need to regularly visit rice fields to promptly detect pests and report to professional agencies to come up with optimal treatment plans to protect the crop,” said Mr. Tuan.
