Tuong Da Commune Farmers' Association visited the 1,000m2 coconut garden of Mr. Nguyen Hong Sang (right cover), residing in Self-managed People's Group No. 4, Binh An Hamlet.
Mr. Vo Van Thang (commonly known as Muoi Thang), 60 years old, residing in Self-Managed People's Group (NDTQ) No. 4, An Binh Hamlet, shared: "I have 6 hectares of red coconut trees intercropped with green-skinned grapefruit for 10 years. About 5 years ago, I cut down 2 hectares of red coconut trees because I did not understand the cultivation techniques and the price of coconuts was low. When the price of coconuts increased, with the remaining 4 hectares of red coconut trees, I could harvest more than 1.5 million fruits/month and bring in a stable income of more than 15 million VND/month for my family."
Head of the Dong Tam Coconut Cooperative Group (THT) Tran Thi Mung said: The Cooperative Group cooperates with the Tuong Da Commune Community Agricultural Extension Group to transfer practical farming techniques, implement contracts with reputable enterprises in supplying agricultural materials as well as consuming products for members and local farmers. In the future, the Cooperative Group will continue to mobilize farmers to participate in activities, orienting members to properly follow the farming process that has been trained and transferred.
Currently, Tuong Da coconut has been certified and granted a growing area code by 3 units: Vina T&T Group (34 households, total area of 15.4 hectares); Toan Hung Import Export Company Limited (29 households, total area of 21 hectares) and Mekong Fruit Import Export Company Limited (35 households, total area of 28.7 hectares). In particular, Dong Tam Coconut Co., Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kim Thanh - Ben Tre factory (Phu An Hoa commune, Chau Thanh district) under Vina T&T Group; Hao Quang Coconut Co., Ltd. (Tam Phuoc commune, Chau Thanh district) and Mekong Fruit Import Export Company Limited on purchasing coconuts (red, green) and dry coconuts for members of the Co., Ltd. and local coconut farmers.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Sang, 57 years old, residing in Group 4, Binh An Hamlet, confided: “My family has 1 hectare of red coconut trees that have been planted for more than 5 years and bring in an income of over 3.5 million VND/month. At the beginning of the rainy season, I provide organic microbial fertilizer for the plants, with a flow rate of 2 - 3 kg/tree, 2 times/year. I am focusing on organic coconut farming”.
According to local coconut growers, about a month ago, green coconuts cost from 170,000 to 180,000 VND/dozen (12 fruits/dozen) and dried coconuts cost from 200,000 to 220,000 VND/dozen. Currently, as usual at the beginning of the rainy season, coconut prices have tended to decrease in the consumer market (green coconuts cost from 145,000 to 150,000 VND/dozen and dried coconuts cost from 170,000 to 190,000 VND/dozen). The market buys green coconuts for more than 120,000 VND/dozen and dried coconuts for more than 90,000 VND/dozen, bringing in stable profits.
Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tuong Da Commune, Nguyen Bang Giang, said: Coconuts are sold at good prices, allowing growers to reinvest in cultivation and actively participate in the collective economy , contributing to improving productivity and quality, stabilizing output and limiting the situation of being forced down by traders. The Association is interested in promoting and mobilizing farmers to cultivate coconuts in a sustainable organic direction, not abusing chemical fertilizers and pesticides, protecting the environment and land resources.
