Artist Thanh Son and his student - Artist Thanh Long (real name Dang Huong Truyen)
On the evening of August 30, at Hong Lien theater, a large audience came to watch the program "Minishow Thanh Long - The fire of the profession never goes out" directed by Thanh Son. Celebrating the 15th anniversary of the art career of his student, artist Thanh Long.
Director Thanh Son with the coherence in the structure of the play
The first notable point is the structure of the play that director Thanh Son connects and builds a flow of ideas: from the song scene "Stage of life" (like a narrative about acting) to epic and tragic excerpts such as "Dinh San chaos in the execution ground", "Co Loa love and hatred", and then ending with "Thien Mon reverse love" - a magnificent sequence, pushing the audience's emotions to the climax.
That arrangement evokes a flow from basic acting to advanced acting, from everyday life to epic, from individual to community.
Artist Thanh Long
Inheriting the valuable lessons of his brother - the late People's Artist Thanh Tong, for many years, artist Thanh Son has not pursued external appearances. On the contrary, he focuses on the inner depth of the character.
Thanh Son creates restraint and depth
In "Co Loa Love and Hatred", the tragedy of My Chau - Trong Thuy is not lost in the dramatic scene, but is emphasized in the eyes, slow movements, and choked singing. Thanh Long plays the role of An Duong Vuong with great effort, creating the spirit of the role. It is the restraint in acting that highlights the heroic tragedy of ancient plays, creating strong sympathy in the audience.
Artist Thanh Son is always dedicated to passing on his profession to the younger generation.
In "Eternal Spring Night, a Fallen Flower Dynasty", the image of Ly Chieu Hoang's helplessness before the whirlpool of power is heightened by silences, a staging technique rarely used in traditional cai luong, but which brings clear psychological effects. Artist Xuan Truc supported child actress Ho Thao Nhi in playing the role of Ly Chieu Hoang, using all her heart to support the steps of a young stage bud.
Thanh Son - Generational Interference: The Vital Element of Traditional Tuong
One of the great values of the program is the harmony between the generation of veteran artists and the young actors. Meritorious Artist Trinh Trinh, Meritorious Artist Vo Minh Lam, artists Xuan Truc, Thanh Long, Nguyen Hoai Thanh, Hoang Hai, Thuy My, Quach Phu Thanh bring stability in their profession, while: Nha Uyen, Tu Quyen, Vu Hung, Ho Thao Nhi, Minh Khue, Thanh Ha, Kim Thuy, Khanh Ngoc, Thanh Tung, Trung Hieu, Pham Tuyen show their youth, dedication and desire to assert themselves.

It is this connection that creates a passionate transmission of the profession, helping the audience see that traditional opera is not just a memory, but a continuous flow, with people giving and people receiving, like the spirit that People's Artist Thanh Tong left behind and his younger brothers carried out.
Thanh Son creates aesthetic value between epic and humanism
The performances in the mini show do not simply recreate historical or legendary stories, but also touch on human values: filial piety in "Tieu Long saves his father", loyalty in "Dinh San's chaos in the execution ground", love and personal tragedy in "Co Loa's love and hatred". Here, traditional cai luong is placed in a dual aesthetic framework: both epic in appearance and suggestive of humanistic reflection.

If we consider this mini show as an independent work, it is an artistic declaration: traditional opera will survive as long as the artist maintains his passion and the audience can find sympathy.
Artist Thanh Son is good at dancing, martial arts, and has the inner strength to portray character roles, unique male roles, and military generals. Thanh Long inherited those strengths from him. He and his team have proven that traditional cai luong can continue its journey not with closed nostalgia, but by placing the heritage in a new context, making it resonate in contemporary life.
Director Thanh Son's role stands out as an "aesthetic space creator", both preserving the original spirit of traditional theater and breathing into it the spirit of today.
This can be seen as a small but steady step, suggesting the belief that: traditional opera will be continued by the same spirit of love for the profession as Thanh Long.
Artist Thanh Son said: "I always believe that only when the older generation and the younger generation stand on the same stage and pass on energy to each other can traditional opera truly live long. As a director, I am like a conductor, helping each artist develop their strengths while still blending into the whole."
