On October 17, Thanh Son Forest Protection Department coordinated with the Institute of Silviculture Research under the Vietnam Forestry Science Institute, Thang Long Material Joint Stock Company, and the People's Committee of Van Mieu Commune to organize a training conference on developing a sustainable forest management plan and granting forest certification (FSC) for 40 trainees who are leaders, professional staff, heads of residential areas, and representatives of forest owners of Van Mieu Commune; and officers of Thanh Son Forest Protection Department.

Van Mieu Commune was established on the basis of merging and reorganizing 3 commune-level administrative units of the old Thanh Son district, including: Van Mieu Commune, Tan Lap Commune and Tan Minh Commune. With a total natural area of ​​nearly 19 km2 spread over 31 residential areas; Forestry land area of ​​6,000 hectares, of which production forest area is more than 4,000 hectares. In order for forests and forest resources to achieve high economic efficiency according to the 2-level local government model. The Commune People's Committee organized a conference to deploy sustainable forest management activities and grant FSC forest certification to groups of households in Van Mieu Commune.

FSC certification is a voluntary standard developed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to promote responsible forest management globally. This certification ensures that wood products are produced from controlled sources that comply with environmental, social and economic standards.

When the enterprise connects with FSC-certified forest growers, purchasing wood from farmer members for export to the EU - US - Korea - Japan markets is very convenient. The enterprise commits to purchasing wood in FSC-certified growing areas at 5 - 10% higher than the market price at the time.

At the training session, delegates listened to representatives of the Silviculture Research Institute give an overview of FSC, which clarified the FSC organization, FSC certification systems, standards including 10 principles, 70 criteria and 206 indicators built to suit Vietnam when assessing and policies on sustainable forest management and forest certification, benefits from being granted FSC forest certification. At the same time, instructions on the steps to implement forest certification as well as the current situation, causes and solutions to implement FSC forest certification for local households.

Through the training session, leaders and staff of units, localities and households registered to participate in forest planting will grasp the concepts and implementation processes related to FSC forest management certification, thereby applying and implementing effectively in the locality.
