Nguyen Hong Ngoc is the candidate with the highest total score on the National High School Graduation Exam in Quang Binh province.

Ms. Hong, Ngoc's mother, looked at her daughter with tears in her eyes. Ms. Hong said that about 20 years ago, she had traveled from the poor countryside to Dong Nai to work as a factory worker. There, she fell in love with Ngoc's father but broke up after a few years. In the early 2000s, Ngoc's mother left Dong Nai to return to her hometown. When she returned, Ngoc was only 3 years old, and her younger brother was 1 year old.

Back in the countryside, Ngoc and her three children had to live in the house of Mrs. Hong's younger brother. In addition to farming, whenever she had free time, she worked for hire all over the region to pay for her children's education. Because of that, the life of the three mother and children was difficult and difficult in every way.

4 years of college was really too much for Ngoc's mother.

Knowing her family's situation, Ngoc did not know what to do. The mother and daughter then came up with two options: either go work abroad, or go to the South to work for a year and then think about it.

More than anyone else, as a mother, Mrs. Hong also hopes that one day her daughter will be able to enter university. However, 4 years of university is too much for the 55-year-old woman. She looked at the bags of rice stacked in the corner of the house. "Each quintal of rice sells for 700,000 VND. Even if we sell all the rice, we will only get about 5 million VND. And going to school will cost at least tens of millions VND," Mrs. Hong said sadly.

Knowing her family's difficult circumstances, Ngoc always helps her mother with housework and studies well.

“Seeing my mother working so hard, since the end of the first semester, I thought about finishing high school and going to work to help my mother. After the exam, I checked the answers and knew I would get a high score, but a girl from the same village and I discussed going to Hanoi to study the language to work abroad. I planned to borrow the red book of my uncle's land that my mother and I were living on to borrow money. After about 2 years abroad, I would have enough money to get the red book back for my uncle.

On the day of the appointment to go to the North, my mother stopped me from going and looked for a way, so in the end my friend had to go alone," Ngoc said.

Although she tried to stop her son, Ms. Hong still did not know how to earn enough money for him to go to school. Ngoc registered to study at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Ho Chi Minh City. An uncle of Ngoc who is working as a worker there said that he would find a job for now, and when Ngoc came, he would go to work and hoped that he would have the opportunity to go to school.

At that time, she also mentioned going to work abroad. “I also advised Ngoc to think carefully. Going to work only solves immediate problems, while going to school is a long-term future problem,” said Mr. Tinh.
