Raising peacocks provides a high income.

Starting with a pair of peacocks raised as pets in 2019, Mr. Ma Duc Tin in Truong Thanh A hamlet, Truong Khanh commune (Can Tho city) recognized the economic potential of peacocks and built a well-organized enclosure to develop his flock, aiming to sell breeding peacocks and parent birds. To date, Mr. Tin has sold over 1,500 breeding peacocks, earning hundreds of millions of VND per year.

Mr. Ma Duc Tin, residing in Truong Thanh A hamlet, Truong Khanh commune ( Can Tho city), introduces the Indian peacock that he has been raising for many years.

Introducing me to the spacious and clean peacock enclosure, both inside and out, Mr. Ma Duc Tin recounted: "In 2019, I raised my first pair of peacocks as pets. By the end of the year, they had laid 20 eggs, with an 80% hatching rate. Seeing that peacocks are easy to raise and require similar care to raising chickens, I decided to keep all the hatched chicks for experimental breeding. I also boldly bought 20 adult peacocks (16 females, 4 males) and built enclosures to expand the flock. To date, through years of breeding and selection of parent stock, the total number of peacocks in the flock is 134, including 20 females, 5 males, and the rest are chicks and breeding stock; the number of breeding birds sold has exceeded 1,500. From the beginning of 2025 to the present, I have sold over 70 breeding peacocks, estimated..." "We expect to sell 300 peacocks throughout the year, and after deducting all expenses, the profit will be over 300 million VND."

According to Mr. Ma Duc Tin, for peacocks to thrive, the enclosures must be well-ventilated and divided into separate pens for breeding birds, young birds, and chicks to ensure sufficient food for each age group. Each pen should be 3m wide, 5m long, and 3-3.5m high. Four females and one male should be kept together in one pen. Young birds and chicks should be kept in separate pens of 5-50 birds, depending on their size. Peacock feed is similar to chicken feed, including rice, corn, fruits, green vegetables, and root vegetables. To ensure beautiful, glossy feathers, supplement their diet with vitamins intended for chickens, ripe fruits, and tomatoes 3-4 times a week. Breeders can also prevent diseases by using vaccines that follow the same vaccination schedule as chickens.

Currently, Mr. Ma Duc Tin has a total herd of 134 pigs.

Mr. Ma Duc Tin shared his experience: Peacocks lay the most eggs when they are 3 years old or older, and their lifespan is up to 20 years. Adult Indian peacocks weigh from 4-6 kg/bird, are very easy to raise, and do not require much feed. Peacocks hatch within 1-6 months and are ready for sale, reaching a weight of 700 grams or more, with a selling price of 2.5-6 million VND/pair; adult breeding pairs (1 year old or older) are priced from 14-16 million VND/pair. In addition to raising peacocks to supply breeding stock to the market, Mr. Tin also buys breeding stock from other farmers, so he always has a ready supply to meet the large-scale demand of buyers nationwide.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang, Deputy Team Leader of the Mobile Forest Protection and Fire Prevention Team, Rural Development and Forest Protection Sub-Department of Can Tho City, said: "The Indian peacocks raised by Mr. Ma Duc Tin belong to group IIB (endangered, rare, and precious species); therefore, when he started raising peacocks, Mr. Tin fully registered with the unit regarding the number of birds raised, and regularly recorded changes in the flock in his logbook to report to the unit for monitoring. Over time, monitoring the development of peacock farming at Mr. Tin's household, we have observed that the flock is increasing in number, bringing high economic value to the family. In particular, Mr. Tin's Indian peacock farming model has contributed to the formation of a new farming model that provides income for many local households inside and outside the province. From a professional perspective, we advise households that when they want to raise peacocks, they must register with the specialized unit to receive support and guidance, as well as complete all necessary procedures." "Necessary documentation is needed to avoid future complications when raising endangered, rare, or precious animal species."
