The rural appearance in Xa Phien commune is increasingly prosperous.

The life of the Khmer people is constantly changing.

Xa Phien commune has 1,117 households with 4,683 people of Khmer ethnicity, accounting for 14.88% of the commune's population. As a remote commune, Khmer people mainly live on farming, raising livestock, combined with small trading or working for hire. Thanks to the implementation of projects under the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development of Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the period 2021-2030, the lives of Khmer people in Xa Phien have gradually changed.

Over the past 5 years, the commune has had 28 households with housing difficulties receive support to build houses, 36 households receive support for cattle raising. The health of the people is taken care of. In particular, from the program's capital, the locality has built 5 spacious roads with a total cost of nearly 11.5 billion VND.

Mr. Danh Hinh, a prestigious person among ethnic minorities in Nga Bac hamlet, shared: “I am very happy that the Party and State pay attention to the Khmer people in the locality. From this care, our lives have changed visibly.”

Currently, the whole commune still has 44 poor households and 40 near-poor households that need attention and support to rise up. According to Mr. Truong Minh Hoa, Vice Chairman of Xa Phien Commune People's Committee, the most important thing is to focus on sustainable poverty reduction through production and business development, prioritizing investment in essential infrastructure such as bridges and roads to facilitate people's movement of goods and improve income.

Focus on education , improve quality of life

Hau Giang Province Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (old) currently has 203 ethnic minority students studying, of which 200 are Khmer, the rest are Chinese and Choro. Every month, each student receives a scholarship of more than 1.8 million VND along with other expenses, learning tools and living expenses. Nutritious meals and solid, cozy rooms help parents feel secure in sending their children to study.

However, the school's facilities have deteriorated after many years of use. Mr. Son Ngoc Thanh, Vice Principal of the Hau Giang Province Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (formerly), said: "The school's construction items were built a long time ago and are no longer guaranteed. We hope to soon have funding to upgrade and repair them to create better conditions for teaching and learning."

Recently, the People's Councils of Can Tho City, Hau Giang Province and Soc Trang (old) have issued many resolutions on policies to support ethnic minorities. Localities have also applied many other practical support policies and solutions. According to Mr. Tran Quoc Vu, Vice Chairman of the People's Council of Can Tho City, in the coming time, the city plans to issue a new resolution on policies to support ethnic minorities, ensuring that when implemented, it will be more appropriate, effective and closely linked to the practical life of the people.

Can Tho City currently has people from 27 ethnic minorities living together, of which the Khmer ethnic group accounts for about 8% of the population, followed by the Chinese, Cham... Continuing the attention in the previous period, the new Can Tho City will continue to implement specific and practical policies to promptly support and improve the material and spiritual life of ethnic minorities.
