Donald Trump faces 3 new charges

Special prosecutor Jack Smith filed three new charges against former President Trump, bringing the total to 40. He also accused Carlos De Oliveira, a maintenance worker at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, of conspiring to obstruct justice by helping the former president hide documents.

According to the indictment, Mr. De Oliveira, 56, told another employee at the residence that Donald Trump wanted to delete the security camera videos, after the Justice Department issued a subpoena. Prosecutors also accused Mr. De Oliveira of lying to the FBI during a voluntary interview, falsely claiming that he was not involved in moving boxes of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.

Mr Trump is the first former US president to face criminal charges and has been indicted twice this year, once in New York for allegedly falsifying records to conceal hush money paid to an actor, and once for his handling of classified documents.

On June 13, Mr. Trump appeared in federal court in Miami, Florida to hear charges related to the classified documents case and obstruction of justice. Assistant Walt Nauta, who was indicted with Mr. Trump in the classified documents case, also appeared in federal court in Miami and denied allegations that he helped the former president hide classified documents.

The allegations have not affected Mr Trump’s standing in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. A Reuters/Ipsos poll earlier this month showed Mr Trump leading with 47% support, well ahead of second-placed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis with 19%.

Mr. Trump is expected to appear in court in March 2024 in New York and May 2024 in Florida, when the Republican Party may have decided on a candidate to run for President.
