In his speech at the BRICS summit, Putin said Russia had received a proposal from Ukraine through a representative from Türkiye. Ankara learned of Kiev's proposal during the September session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the United States, and then passed the information to the Kremlin.

Mr. Putin did not specify what Ukraine's proposal was.

In addition, Türkiye also put forward an initiative related to the situation in the Black Sea: Ensuring safety in transportation activities, establishing certain agreements. Ankara called on the two sides to reach security agreements related to nuclear energy facilities.

According to Mr. Putin, he initially agreed to the proposal, but after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his plan to win over Moscow, Russia said the move had "neutralized the possibility of negotiations between the two sides."

Asked to rate the chances of resolving the war with Ukraine on a scale of 1-10, Mr Putin said he did not see fit to give any score.

Last week, Mr. Zelensky presented to parliament a roadmap for winning the conflict with Russia, including five public points and three secret annexes.

In his plan, Mr. Zelensky called on Western countries to invite Ukraine to join NATO immediately to demonstrate a clear intention to integrate Ukraine into the Western security system. According to Mr. Zelensky, this is also a sign of the West's courage and determination.

In addition, he also called on the West to provide more long-range weapons to Ukraine and allow them to be used to attack targets within Russian territory.

Mr. Zelensky also proposed that Western countries deploy non-nuclear military forces in Ukraine after the war to prevent Russia from continuing its attacks.

Shortly afterwards, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed Mr Zelensky's plan, saying it would only prolong the conflict. He called on Ukraine to "come to its senses and reflect on the reasons that led to the conflict".

Russia also called on Kiev to recognize the new "territorial reality", something Ukraine has repeatedly rejected. The difference in views between Russia and Ukraine has prevented the two sides from resuming negotiations, which were interrupted more than two years ago.

In another development, Mr. Putin denied media reports that he still maintains contact with former US President Donald Trump after his term ends in 2021.

"This issue has been of concern for many years. At one point, Mr. Trump and Russia were accused of being linked. However, after an investigation was conducted in the United States, everyone, including the US Congress, concluded that it was completely absurd and that nothing like that had ever happened. At that time, we had no contact at all, and we don't have any now," he stressed.
