On October 25, US President Donald Trump announced that he would increase tariffs on imported goods from Canada by 10%, after the province of Ontario aired a television advertisement quoting the late President Ronald Reagan to criticize US tariffs.

In a message posted on the Truth Social platform while on Air Force One en route to Malaysia, Mr. Trump wrote: “The ad should be removed immediately, but it aired last night during the Major League Baseball Finals.” The US president called this a “serious misrepresentation of the truth,” so he decided to add an additional 10% tariff on Canadian goods.

It is unclear what legal authority Mr Trump will use to impose the additional tariffs. The White House has not yet announced when the additional 10% tariffs will take effect or whether they will apply to all Canadian goods.

The Ontario government said earlier that the approximately $75 million CAD ($54 million USD) ad campaign is scheduled to air on hundreds of US television channels in October, including the Major League Baseball season opener. The ad uses images and audio of the late President Reagan in a 1987 speech calling for free trade and opposing tariffs.

Citing the above advertisement, President Trump announced the end of “all trade negotiations” with Canada. For his part, Ontario Premier Doug Ford - the province that sponsored the advertisement - said that after talking with Prime Minister Mark Carney, he decided to pause the promotional campaign to facilitate the resumption of trade dialogue with Washington.

With the US market accounting for 75% of Canada’s exports, the country is particularly vulnerable to any trade moves from Washington. While most goods remain tariff-free under the US-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA), the new tariffs have hit key industries like steel, aluminum and autos hard. The US currently imposes a 35% tariff on many products, a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum, and a 10% tariff on energy imports from Canada.
