A 157-page lawsuit against OpenAI was filed in federal court in San Francisco, California, on June 28 by an anonymous group of individuals. The plaintiffs' names were abbreviated to avoid retaliation, Bloomberg reported, citing a statement from the law firm Clarkson, which represents the plaintiffs.

According to the allegations, OpenAI violated privacy laws by secretly stealing $300 billion from the internet, using information from books, websites, and online posts containing personal information without the consent of the authors. Hundreds of millions of internet users, including children, are believed to have had their information stolen without their consent. The company accessed the private information of individuals interacting with OpenAI's products and applications connected to ChatGPT.
The lawsuit alleges that the defendant "stole" information despite having established rules regarding the purchase and use of personal data. The plaintiffs accuse OpenAI of posing a risk of "the collapse of civilization" and claim that the damages caused by the company amount to $3 billion.
This large-scale theft and use of personal data is believed to be aimed at helping OpenAI win the AI race. The ChatGPT chat application and other OpenAI products are trained using this personal information.
The plaintiffs allege that OpenAI, in its pursuit of profit, abandoned a fundamental principle in AI development: how to best benefit all of humanity. The lawsuit estimates OpenAI's revenue in 2023 at $200 million.
Tech mogul Elon Musk fears AI and calls for legislation to regulate it.
The plaintiffs are asking the court to determine the amount of compensation for damages to those whose information was stolen, as well as to temporarily freeze the use of OpenAI products and prevent the company from further developing them.
Microsoft, which plans to invest $13 billion in OpenAI, has also been named as a defendant. Microsoft and OpenAI have not immediately commented on the lawsuit.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late 2022, and the application quickly took the world by storm with its ability to chat, solve math problems, write essays, and complete dissertations. ChatGPT's success fueled the AI race in the tech world, with companies of all sizes rushing to develop and deploy AI tools.
