Web infrastructure company Cloudflare announced that it has fully restored services after an incident on November 18 that left thousands of users unable to access major internet platforms such as X and ChatGPT.
Cloudflare, which handles about 20% of global web traffic, said the outage occurred at around 6:30 a.m. ET on November 18, due to an automatically generated configuration file to manage potential security threats.
The file grew so large it crashed the software systems responsible for handling traffic for some of Cloudflare's services, the company said.
The company said it has begun investigating the issue and is rolling out a patch. However, some customers may still be affected as service is restored globally. Cloudflare said there is no evidence the issue was the result of an attack or malicious activity.
Cloudflare operates one of the world's largest networks, helping websites and apps load faster and stay online by protecting them from traffic spikes and cyberattacks.
The latest outage at Cloudflare has left thousands of users unable to access platforms like Canva, X, Grindr, and ChatGPT, prompting users to report the issue to monitoring tool Downdetector.
According to the issue tracker Downdetector, the number of reports of Cloudflare-related issues has dropped from a peak of more than 11,000 reports to about 2,800 reports as of 10:20 a.m. ET on November 18 (approximately 10:20 p.m. the same day Vietnam time).
In Vietnam, as of 10:30 a.m. on November 19, users were able to access ChatGPT./.
