OpenAI has just released Sora to the public. In addition to being able to create videos up to 20 seconds long from text, the tool can also complete a shot and extend existing videos by filling in missing frames.

According to product manager Rohan Sahai, a team of about 5-6 engineers developed Sora over several months.

OpenAI demonstrated the new product and its features during a livestream on December 9 with CEO Sam Altman.

Sora also includes an Explore page for users to watch videos shared by the community. The tool comes equipped with several different filmmaking styles.

To further customize videos, Sora introduces Storyboard, which allows users to arrange and edit sequences on the timeline.

When it introduced Sora in February, OpenAI admitted that the tool could struggle to simulate the physics of a complex scene. It could also get confused about the direction in which events occurred.

The Sora development team said they wanted to prevent illegal activities from taking advantage of Sora, while balancing creativity.

It will be some time before the tool is available in the UK and much of Europe, according to Altman.

ChatGPT Plus subscribers can produce up to 50 5-second, 720p videos per month. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Pro users can produce unlimited slow-motion videos and 500 faster-motion videos. They can also create videos up to 20 seconds long in 1080p without watermarks.

While free ChatGPT users can't create videos using Sora, they can browse Explore to watch other people's videos.
