You have to know your "self-respect" to rise above!

Speaking at a meeting with the Editorial Board and key officials of Lam Dong Newspaper and Radio and Television last week, Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Muoi shared frankly and profoundly: "We must know how to feel 'proud' because we are 'the biggest in the country' and strive to live up to that position."

According to the provincial government leader, "leaders of each agency and unit should strive to fulfill their responsibilities correctly, first and foremost for their own expectations, not for the expectations of the provincial leadership."

It can be affirmed that the message from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee to the leadership of the provincial press agencies in particular, and the leaders of departments and agencies in general, is not just a reminder, but a practical command. Because when a locality becomes the "largest province in the country" in terms of area and ranks among the top in population, both the advantages and challenges will be equally significant. Therefore, the first thing needed is not complacency in this new position, but a new leadership mindset, a strong and decisive character to realize personal expectations into the trust of the provincial leadership and the hopes of the people in each agency, unit, and locality.

Not long ago, during a meeting with leaders of the three provinces of Lam Dong, Binh Thuan, and Dak Nong to prepare for the merger of the new Lam Dong province, General Secretary To Lam also noted: The merger of the three provinces is not only a milestone in administrative organization, but also opens a turning point in leadership and management thinking, leading to larger, more complex, and more opportunity-rich development. The core question the General Secretary posed – How to develop, what to prioritize, where to find breakthroughs, and where to find resources – is a suggestion for leaders of departments, sectors, and localities in Lam Dong province to break free from the mindset of focusing on short-term goals, achievements, and formalities, in order to jointly create an administrative entity that is highly competitive and sustainably developed.

Returning to the remarks of the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Ho Van Muoi, he emphasized the personal qualities of a leader: "First and foremost, for the sake of one's own expectations." Because if one only works to "live up to the expectations of the provincial leadership," that is a passive, reactive mindset. Conversely, when the heads of agencies and units possess professional self-respect, positive "self-esteem," and sufficiently strong personal aspirations, they can then spread the spirit of innovation throughout the entire system.

"The largest province in the country" cannot operate with the mindset of an "upgraded provincial level," nor can it wait for directives from above before acting. In a "new, more complex, and more opportunity-rich entity," as the General Secretary pointed out, proactive strategy, committed action, and a desire for development must become the "standard of leadership" for the new era.

For Vietnamese people, "Pride is easy, self-respect is hard." But only when we have true "self-respect"—that is, refusing to fall behind, refusing to stand still, refusing to be satisfied with titles—but instead having "self-respect and self-esteem" because we are "the greatest in the country"—can we truly strive to live up to that title. Only then can we truly be worthy of the trust and expectations of the people and of the history that is transforming this highland and coastal region full of potential.
