That is the goal set out in the pre-feasibility study report of the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project recently submitted by the My Thuan Project Management Board to the Ministry of Construction . This report was prepared by the consortium of Southern Transport Design Consulting Joint Stock Company - Transport Design Consulting Corporation - Transport Construction Investment Consulting Joint Stock Company.
According to research, the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway line is 175.2km long; the starting point is at An Binh station in Di An ward, Ho Chi Minh City; the ending point is at Can Tho station in Hung Phu ward, Can Tho city. This railway line passes through 5 provinces and cities: Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Dong Thap , Vinh Long and Can Tho.
The Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway line has been newly invested to transport both passengers and goods. This is a double-track railway line, 1,435mm gauge, electrified, designed speed 160km/h.
The entire route invests in 12 stations, 3 depots (An Binh, Tan Kien, Can Tho); 4 vehicle maintenance and inspection stations (Thanh Duc, Tam Hiep, Cai Lay, Binh Minh);
3 infrastructure maintenance stations; 3 large river crossing bridge locations (Saigon River, Dong Vam Co River, Tay Vam Co River) and 2 especially large river crossing bridge locations (Tien River and Hau River).
For this railway line, the bridge section accounts for about 56% of the length of the line, applied in places passing through urban areas, densely populated areas, crossing rivers, terrain and not intersecting with other structures. About 44% of the length of the line runs on the ground through sparsely populated areas, not intersecting with other structures and areas less affected by floods, with stable geological conditions.
The consultant proposed to clear the land for the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project at once according to the plan with an area of about 801.5 hectares. Of which, agricultural land is about 479.13 hectares. It is expected that about 11,437 households will have to be resettled to implement the project.
Based on the scale of the economy, the ability to mobilize capital, and international experience, to ensure successful investment in the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project, the consultant proposed that the project investment form be public investment.
Preliminary total investment in phase I (single-track investment, design speed 160km/h): about 173,643 billion VND, equivalent to 7.16 billion USD, of which compensation and resettlement costs are about 45,675 billion VND.
Total investment in phase II (investment in completing the double track, design speed 160km/h) is about 64,973 billion VND, equivalent to about 2.7 billion USD.
The progress of the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway project is expected to follow the following milestones:
Submit to the National Assembly for approval of investment policy: in the fourth quarter of 2025; approve investment project in the third quarter of 2026; carry out site clearance from the third quarter of 2026; complete front-end engineering design (FEED) for the entire project in 2026; complete technical design, select construction contractor to start construction of the project by the end of 2027; basically complete construction by 2035.
