French prosecutors said on October 6 they were opening an investigation into Apple's voice assistant Siri after receiving a complaint from a technology researcher accusing the company of illegally collecting data.

The case has been handed over to the police unit specializing in cybercrime, the Paris prosecutor's office said, without providing further details.

Technology researcher Thomas Le Bonniec confirmed to reporters that he was behind the complaint, filed by Ligue des Droits de l'Homme (LDH) - one of France's oldest human rights organizations.

LDH previously said the complaint accuses Apple of collecting, recording and analyzing Siri conversations without users' consent. The organization did not respond to a request for comment on October 6.

Mr Le Bonniec stressed that opening a criminal investigation sends a clear message that “fundamental rights are important, and there are still organizations and individuals determined to protect them.”

Apple said on October 6 that it had strengthened security measures for Siri since 2019 and continued to tighten them this year.

Apple cited a January post on its website that asserted that conversations with Siri “are never shared with advertisers or sold to third parties”./.
